The Best Of Daily Blog Tips in 2010

Posted: 31 Dec 2010 05:55 AM PST

Another year is in the can, and as usual I am creating a list with the most popular posts I published in 2010. Make sure to check them out if you missed some, and a happy 2011 to every one!

The Blog Post Checklist: How many times have you published a post, only to find out you forgot to proofread and that many typos slipped through? What about when the links you included are broken, when you used the wrong keywords, or when you forgot to optimize the post title?

10 Ways to Get Your Comments Blocked or Deleted: Leaving comments on other blogs is one of the most efficient ways to promote your own blog, and to network with fellow readers and blog owners. Given the rise of blog spam, however, getting your comments approved is not as easy as it sounds.

15 Things I Wish I Knew When I Started Blogging: I built my first blog back in 2005, and today a large part of my online income is generated from my blogs. Over these years I made many mistakes and figured some things out. Below you'll find 15 of them.

Interview: 12 Top Online Entrepreneurs Share How Hard They Work: I strongly believe that behind every successful person there is a huge amount of hard work, and that is why I am always interested in learning how long and how hard other entrepreneurs work (maybe to confirm that I am not the only one crazy out there….).

What Is Success?: This past weekend I was browsing through my RSS reader, and I came across an interesting post titled What is success? Impact. The author is basically questioning what should be considered success (on a professional level), and he comes to the conclusion that success should be measured as the positive impact his work will have upon the lives of other people.

15 Tips For Those Who Want to Make Money Online: If you are hoping for some kind of 'secret' or 'magic pill', I am sorry but you will not find it within this post. In fact, I can assure you that you will not find it anywhere else on the Internet either. However, that doesn't spell doom and surely doesn't mean that you will never be able to achieve your goal of making money online. While there are no secrets or magic pills, there are tips and points that can help you in your journey.

Top 10 Tips to Sell Your Website or Blog on Flippa: If you are planning to buy or sell a website, you probably already heard about Flippa. It is the largest online marketplace for websites. Most people who list a website for sale there, however, end up selling it for peanuts (e.g., $100), or not selling at all.

5 Reasons Why You Should Respond To Every Comment: If you enable comments on your blog (which I'm sure most of you do), then you obviously want your readers to interact by leaving comments after your post. Then why, I ask, does it usually end up being a one-sided conversation?

What Is Bounce Rate?: Today I was going to write about why new websites can display very misleading bounce rates, but I realized I had never covered the bounce rate concept before, so I'll stick to the basics today, and expand on the topic over the coming weeks.

10 Things Bloggers Should NOT Do: Every now and then I will see a list of things bloggers should do, but I notice people are not that inclined to do what they are asked to do, while they pay more attention to things they should NOT do. That is why I decided to create the list below.

What If I Had $1,500 To Start My Blog?: First of all I would recommend you to spend part of that money purchasing a good domain name. As a rule of thumb, look for something with 2 words, a .com extension, and with some branding potential.

5 Reasons to Take A Break From Your Blog: Approximately three months ago, I had a personal loss in my family. As a result of that loss, I took a much-needed break from blogging. It ended up being about two months of posting nothing to my blog, or anyone else's, for that matter.

5 Ways to Rid Complacency From Your Blog

Posted: 30 Dec 2010 03:39 AM PST

If you've owned a blog for a while there's a good chance that complacency may have already set in. Dictionary.com defines complacency as “a feeling of quiet pleasure or security, often while unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like; self-satisfaction or smug satisfaction with an existing situation, condition, etc.”

The key expression in the above definition is the phrase "unaware of some potential danger, defect, or the like". Maybe you've been writing for a while and have gained some notoriety through guest posting and have built up a pretty good following in terms of subscribers. It's only natural that we think that all is well and we just have to put our blogs on auto-pilot.

Maybe in the past year you've accepted a lot of guest posters because of that notoriety and have published a lot of those posts on your blog that simply were not written by you. It's easy to do. There are many people out there who will write content for you and if you regularly accept their guest posts to make it easier for you to maintain your blog, you are making a big mistake. You are taking away the "you" from your blog and are basically making your blog a posting forum.

You could also become complacent in how you are approaching the responsibility of owning a blog. You say to yourself "I've figured this out" and you don't keep learning and growing from the blogging community. You've basically acquired a "smug satisfaction" (see above definition) with your blog and just end up going through the motions. Well, in order to take back your blog and continue improving, it is important to make some changes in your approach to blogging.

1. Re-focus – Think about why you got into blogging. No doubt it was because you love to write and love to express your views. A prerequisite trait of all successful blog owners is the love of writing. Think about it. Without the passion to write you'll get sick of blogging real quickly. If you got into this venture to make money first and write second, I contend that you will fail. Turn your focus back to your love of writing and, if you want to make some money down the line using your writing skills, so much the better. Think of re-focusing as getting back to your roots of blogging.

2. Re-energize – Bring some energy to your writing. Don't write when you are tired. Pick a time of the day when you are fresh and feel good about yourself and your day. If you don't feel like writing that day, don't! I've found that unless all is good in my life, I really have no desire to write anyway. So I'll typically just skip that day as far as blogging is concerned. Believe me, you'll only produce less-than-worthy content that will reflect badly on your brand which is your blog.

3. Re-commit – Commit to providing high quality content. Don't write lesser quality posts in order to meet a posting schedule. It will show in your writing and your readers will pick up on that as well. Make a commitment to yourself to top quality content regardless of the posting schedule. Some successful blog owners post once a month but they are producing top notch material and worth the wait for the readers.

4. Re-evaluate – Take a good long look at your blog design. Maybe even ask within a blogging forum for others to critique your blog site. Take their recommendations to heart and make some changes if need be. What you knew when you started your blog is nothing compared to what you know now. You've seen a lot of blogs by now and you must've seen plugins or even themes that you found really interesting running on those blogs. If you don't know how these were implemented or what they are called, feel free to contact the blog owners and ask them. You will find that other blog owners can be really helpful if you just ask.

5. Rejuvenate – If you take the steps mentioned above, you and your blog will become rejuvenated. You will breathe new life into your blog and it will begin to flourish again. The complacency will disappear. You will, as a result, make your blog fresh and new again and it will show in your content.

Think about whether or not you've become complacent in your blogging. If you make it a point to take some of the above points to heart and make some changes maybe you'll find that you'll get back to your roots. You remember, those true reasons why you became a blogger. Those reasons are why you can't wait to sit at your computer and churn out another quality post. Sometimes I think it helps to be reminded of such things. If you heed some of this advice maybe you and your blog will feel new again and revitalized. Enjoy the process!

The Numbers to $1,000,000: How is Your Blogging Progress?

Posted: 29 Dec 2010 03:38 AM PST

million-dollars-blogging

My multimillionaire uncle told me to always have three projects: a short term source of income, a medium term project or two, and a long term goal that you are making a reality. And the only way to assess whether this work is making you good, sustainable income is to look at the numbers again and again.

In this post I want to look at the numbers to $1,000,000 and see how your blogging progress is going.

Why a million?

A million dollars is a large number that most people dream about. And while it seems far off and distant for many people, for others it is quite achievable. And as bloggers we have something that other generations did not. The Internet. Google. Facebook. These giants are capable of sending tens or hundreds of thousands of visitors to your blog every week. All you need is a domain and a host and you are on your way.

Compare that to the old days when you needed a railroad or a factory or an entire office building to make that kind of money and you will realize that we have a very unique opportunity right here and now. And if you think its not possible to make a million dollars from blogging alone then you might want to think again. Darren Rowse does it. So do a bunch of others.

The numbers to $1,000,000

Lets take a look at some figures to see whether you are on track for your goal. Remember, you don’t need to make a million to change your life and perhaps even change the lives of others. You might only need $40k or $50k a year to completely change things. That’s what this post is about.

Let’s say you start a blog and you are going to make money by selling an eBook. Here are some very rough, small and static numbers to think about:

  • You write three posts a week aiming to grow email subscribers and build a community
  • You do some light SEO work and begin to get traffic from Google as well as social media
  • You get around 100 visitors a day after six months
  • You convert 10% of those visitors into email subscribers
  • In one year you have (182 x 10) 1820 subscribers assuming none were gathered in the first six months
  • You sell an eBook at $49 to 50% of your list and make $44,590 in your first year (910 x $49).

Sure, the reality could be totally different. It could be better or it could be worse. Some factors will push the income up and others will push it down. On Blog Tyrant, for example, I have written only 20 posts and already get around 40 to 60 new email subscribers per day. So after a year I could have closer to 14,000 subscribers to sell an eBook to. And the above equation doesn’t take into account ongoing sales, affiliates, etc.

As a blogger you need to constantly assess your goals and your targets. If you want to get to a million dollars you need to adjust the numbers and set them as targets. There is absolutely no point blogging aimlessly and hoping that one day you might strike it rich. If you aren’t getting the 1000 or 2000 (or 10,000) daily visitors that you need, then you have to take a look at what is going wrong and fix it.

What is your plan?

I am really interested in hearing about your plan. Are you aiming for a certain level? Do you have the numbers and the strategy all worked out or are you kind of just floating through and hoping that it will all add up in the end? More importantly, are you growing? Please leave a comment and let me know.

6 Blogging Mistakes You Might Not Have Considered - DailyBlogTips

6 Blogging Mistakes You Might Not Have Considered - DailyBlogTips

6 Blogging Mistakes You Might Not Have Considered

Posted: 28 Dec 2010 04:29 AM PST

This is a guest post by Bamboo Forest. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Talent and smarts don't always equate to successful blogging. For example, you could be a great writer and use Twitter effectively to promote your site, but still miss the mark in other critical areas of your blog.

Lists with blogging mistakes are pretty common, and useful, but there are some mistakes that usually are not included. I created a list with 6 of them, and I suspect you might not be paying attention to those, so check it out.

1. Publishing a series of posts consecutively all on the same subject

I have nothing against doing a series on a blog as long as it's done right. If done wrong, you'll have created a scenario in which it's painful to read your blog.

For example, you're a personal-development blogger and writing a series on positive thinking. If you post five consecutive days on this subject you will have destroyed one of the greatest assets a blog can have, variety.

If you're planning on doing a series on a single subject, I advise you don't do it over consecutive days. Publish some posts on a different subject in between your series posts. This way you can still do a series without killing variety on your blog.

2. Not using pictures

While there are occasions when not using pictures is wise, much of the time it's a costly mistake.

The most obvious benefit a picture provides is that it encourages people to dive into your post.

Another thing you must realize is that a picture is not merely benefiting the single post it's in; it's also benefiting your entire blog design.

People are often shallow when they land on a new blog. If they see you include pictures in your posts, they're more likely to investigate your blog further.

Text without a picture is like a store without windows.

Just think of how many more subscribers you could gain over the long term by taking the time to include pictures with almost every post.

3. Failing to use subheadings

I used to rarely use subheadings in my blog posts because I don't particularly like them. I later realized that just because I don't like them doesn't mean that everyone else feels how I do.

Unlike me, many people scan posts when they read them. If scanners come to a post that isn't scanner friendly, they're not going to give you the time of day.

Every post you write that's not short should have subheadings.

4. Making paragraphs too large

I'm not going to give you a specific rule on what constitutes a large paragraph, but you know it when you see it.

Paragraphs the size of mountains are extremely intimidating to the eye. If I see a blog post with large paragraphs, I won't read it no matter how good the content may be.

Keep your paragraphs short to encourage as many people as possible to read your content.

5. Not displaying all your content in a subscriber's feed reader

Some bloggers opt to only provide a link to their posts in the feed reader.

While doing the above will get more people to click over to your blog from the feed reader, you'll also upset your readers, encourage them to unsubscribe and will end up with a significantly smaller readership in the end.

The fact that virtually all successful bloggers have their entire post displayed in their RSS feed is all the proof you need that it's the most strategic thing to do.

6. Waiting to do guest posts

If you have a blog with a giant readership like this one, it's understandable that you don't feel compelled to guest post.

But for most of us, the objective is to grow our readership so that one day it's huge like this one.

With a small readership you can publish a remarkable post and receive almost nothing beneficial from it.

In fact, some very talented bloggers will publish remarkable post after remarkable post and never really go anywhere with their blog.

When you consistently publish great posts on your blog and get no retweets, and no new subscribers, it's time to ensure that a significant percentage of your finest material is submitted to other blogs so that your blog not only gains subscribers, but also gets on the radar of other influential bloggers.

While nothing can guarantee you become a successful blogger, there are definitely things you can do to at least ensure you have a fighting chance.

Are Social Bookmarking Sites Dying?

Posted: 27 Dec 2010 05:49 AM PST

A couple of weeks ago Technorati released the State of The Blogosphere 2010, and one part of their report that caught my attention was the traffic sources breakdown.

The report illustrated that bloggers are getting social media traffic from two websites mainly: Facebook and Twitter. All the others have been dwarfed, as you can see in the image below.

social-bookmarking-dead

Some years ago getting in the front page of Digg, StumbleUpon or Delicious was the dream of any website owner, but it looks like that is not the case anymore. Facebook and Twitter are the only options right now.

And there is even more evidence to confirm this trend. Digg launched a new version some months ago, and it pretty much collapsed ever since. Its loyal users abandoned the ship claiming that the new version completely changed the dynamic of the site, and traffic is going down hill. I remember that a couple of years ago the top stories would get as much as 3,000 diggs, and now they get 200 or 300.

What about Delicious? It was one of the first social bookmarking sites, and it was tremendously useful, with a huge number of users who loved the service. Last week Yahoo! (the company who bought the site back in 2005) announced that they will either be closing Delicious down or selling it to someone.

I haven’t seen any news about StumbleUpon, but I don’t think it is going that well either. I used to get a lot of traffic from it on most of my websites, and that is all gone. Most of my webmaster friends are seeing the same pattern, so people seem not to be stumbling that much anymore.

All this background information to ask the following questions: Are social bookmarking sites dying? If so, why did this happen? The idea of bookmarking web pages socially seemed like a solid one, and if you ever used it you certainly saw the benefits. Despite that users are moving on to new and different things. What do you think?

7 Tips to Keep the Blogging Fires Burning! - DailyBlogTips

7 Tips to Keep the Blogging Fires Burning!

Posted: 24 Dec 2010 04:44 AM PST

This is a guest post by Jennifer Brown Banks. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

You know how in the beginning of a relationship everybody’s interested and interesting? How we keep up our appearance? How we interact, engage and put forth our best effort?

Then with some time and familiarity we tend to take things for granted. The fun factor fizzles, or we simply lose steam. Or perhaps our attention is diverted by some other "new and shiny object."

Well, the same thing happens with blogging.

Here’s the scenario.

In the beginning you work hard to create posts to bring people to your spot. You appear at the popular social media sites in hopes of "making friends and influencing people." You’re consistent in your blog updates.
After awhile, you find you’ve hit your stride!

Your followers increase, you have repeat visitors, and your amount of comments are encouraging. Eureka, you’ve found success!

That’s the honeymoon stage.

Fast forward.

It’s a year later, or two, or five. And your blog has the excitement factor of a tax audit.

It’s like a ghost town. The activity level has dwindled and so has your motivation. In the words of singer Roberta Flack, "Where is the love?"

Don’t despair. It happens. But you can resurrect a dying blog and get back that lovin’ feelin’ with a few creative, strategic steps. Here’s how.

  1. Take a break. That’s right—put up your "gone fishing" sign on your site, and disconnect. Take time to cultivate new ideas, to relax and rejuvenate. Sometimes absence makes the heart grow fonder.
  2. Survey or poll your readers to assess their interests and to determine your future direction.
  3. Schedule guest bloggers to bring a different perspective and new energy to your site. Which bloggers do you admire? Start there.
  4. Study and analyze your most popular previous posts. What was the common denominator? Were they posted on Tuesdays? Were they technical in nature? Rev up that traffic by doing a repeat performance!
  5. Post interviews with prominent people in your niche. A good rule of thumb is to diversify your content so readers won’t get bored.
  6. Don’t be afraid to court controversy. (Remember the Dixie Chicks and President Bush)? Sometimes "stirring the pot" can have hot results!
  7. Respond to comments. To cultivate an active blog community, it’s crucial to be responsive to readers’ questions and comments. There’s great truth to the expression, "people don’t care how much you know until they know how much you care." .

Follow these seven tips to keep the blog fires burning, and most importantly to avoid burn out!

Hello Blogger user!

We know it’s been a little while since you’ve heard directly from us, so here we are again to spread the latest product news and updates from the Blogger Team.

Things have been very busy over here recently, as we’ve been working really hard to develop a number of new features while also building out new teams in global offices. Over the last few months we’ve put a lot of energy towards turning your suggestions into improvements to Blogger, and just in case you missed something along the way, we’ve compiled a list of our favorite updates for you to check out.

And while you’re busy reading through this list, we’ll be putting the final touches on the next round of exciting stuff. Make sure to stay tuned for 2011; we have big plans in store.

Features

Comment Filtering

Hopefully you’ve noticed the new Comments tab in your dashboard, which we added over the summer as part of our upgrade to the comment system. This Comment Inbox is a centralized place where you can manage all of your comment-related tasks, like delete published comments, manage comments that have been flagged as spam, and moderate awaiting comments (if you’ve enabled Comment Moderation).

We’ve also started analyzing all posted comments in our system, and are automatically classifying the ones we believe to be spam. Similar to Gmail’s spam filtering, you can help us improve our classifiers by telling us whether the comments we’ve caught are actually spam.

Stats

The Stats tab is another recent addition to the dashboard, and is the hub for all your blog’s realtime traffic data. Pageviews, reader location, browser types, popular posts, and referral sources are just a few of the pieces of information we’re constantly collecting for each blog.

If you want to show off your blog’s traffic data to your readers, we’ve also built Blog Stats and Popular Posts gadgets which you can add to your template. These can be added from the Gadget Directory at any time, and have a variety of configurable options to change the display and data layout.

Background Image Upload

Earlier in the summer we released our Template Designer to all users, and asked for your feedback about what other features we could add to make it even better. By far the top request was the ability to upload your own background image, and we’re happy to say that this feature is now live within the Template Designer.

To upload your own background image to your blog, simply click on the Background section within the Template Designer.

Mobile BlogSpot

We realize that more and more users are accessing the web on smartphones, and we want to make sure that blogs still look nice when viewed on these smaller screens. We’ve put a lot of work into creating a mobile version of BlogSpot, which will automatically detect if a blog is accessed on a smartphone and then display a mobile-optimized version.

Mobile BlogSpot is live now on Blogger in Draft, and can be enabled from the Settings | Email & Mobile tab. From there you can also check out a mobile preview version of your blog to see what it will look like.

Web Fonts

The Google Web Fonts team has made great progress on expanding font options across the web, especially for non-Latin alphabets like Cyrillic and Greek. We’ve taken advantage of their work and now offer 40 new Web Fonts in the Template Designer on Blogger in Draft. For the full list, check out our Help Center article.

Since I would imagine that your blog is an important part of your life, I'm sure many of you are looking for ways to add value to your blog. You want to make some positive enhancements to your blog as the New Year comes ringing in.

As a fellow blogger, I too am always looking for ways to improve my blog site and my blogging, for that matter. But I want to set some realistic goals that can be met. Not attaining unrealistic goals can be disheartening. For example, at my present place of employment, we had a VP of Sales who, every month, would project an unrealistic pie-in-the-sky revenue number. It was so unrealistic that the monthly revenue number was never met and eventually his words fell on deaf ears. He wasn't taken seriously and the sales reps became disenchanted because they could never reach the goals that the VP was spouting.

So, this year, try to set some goals that are attainable. Don't go into the New Year with the goal of hitting a Page Rank of 6 if that is unrealistic. Don't strive for a subscriber number of 10,000 if it's clearly not attainable. Take baby steps and try to take positive steps and maybe you'll build some momentum in the coming year.

1. Tweak your Theme
I purchased a fully functional WordPress theme for my blog a while back and I really like it. The thing is, I'm probably utilizing a fraction of its functionality. This year I am hoping to learn more about all of the bells and whistles that my theme can do for my blog site. I'm hoping to tweak my theme in an effort to present my visitors with a new look and feel. Try not to stay stagnant with the look of your blog. Take advantage of what your theme can do for you. If you're not happy with your current theme, there are plenty out there that you can purchase for a reasonable amount.

2. Become SEO-savvy
I am guilty of being an SEO novice. I understand the concept but I have yet to truly implement it on my blog site. We all want to rank high in the search engines and, in order to do so, we must become SEO-savvy. You could outsource and use a consultant or you could buy one of the many books out there that speak to SEO. I'm planning on buying a book and boning up on the subject.

3. Collaborate
There are many other bloggers out there in your niche. Consider a joint venture or a collaborative effort with one or many bloggers in your niche space. It may be mutually beneficial. Chances are you are already commenting on their posts. Get to talking and you might find that there could be a project you could work on together that could boost your blogs' visibility.

4. Advertise
One of the best ways to advertise that your blog actually exists in the blogosphere is to guest post. I know that you've probably heard over and over that guest posting helps your blog become noticed. The reason you have heard this is because it is true. Daniel, the owner of this illustrious blog, is letting me do so with this post. I simply could not reach as large an audience without Daniel allowing me this opportunity. Seek out the larger blogs in your space and request to guest post. Don't be intimidated. They can only say "No". But if you are persistent and write a quality post, chances are your name and your blog link will be in lights in front of a whole new audience.

5. Outsource
I learned quickly that there are technical aspects of the blogging world of which I may not have the expertise. Instead of trying to do everything, it may behoove you to seek out a consultant who really knows what they are doing. There are many WordPress consultants who charge a reasonable fee if you want to move from one theme to another or if you just need some technical expertise. And when it comes to graphic artists, I found one to create banners for my sites and will use her to create some more images that I hope to use for marketing my online business. Outsourcing may save you a lot of time and aggravation at a nominal cost.

6. Take the time
Time management is always an issue for us blog owners. If you are not a full-time blogger and have a 9-5 job, you must take the time for your blogging. Set aside your lunch hour at your day job and devote it to your blog. Even if you are just writing your blog post in a notepad, you can then transfer it to your WordPress blog at your convenience. Writing the content is the hard part and if you can get it done on your lunch break, you'll be way ahead of the game.

7. Take back your blog
If your blog has had some type of popularity, chances are there are other blog owners who want to guest post on your blog. This past year I got into a bad habit of publishing too many guest posts on my blog. The problem is that anyone who subscribed to your blog did so because they liked your writing. If you are constantly publishing others' work then your regular subscribers will become disenchanted. Make it a point to keep the guest posts on your blog to a minimum. Even if you can't post as many articles, it will be well received by your regular readers.

8. Take a break
This past year I was forced to take a break in my blogging due to a loss in my family. What I actually learned from this experience was that the break helped me revitalize my feelings toward blogging. When I eventually got back into it, I had a whole new sense of exhilaration toward writing. It is definitely worthwhile to take a break in your blogging if you feel you have become stagnant. You may find that it will really help you approach your blog in a new light when you get back into it.

9. Join a forum
I belong to a couple of forums on blogging. What I have found is that it gives me a connection to other bloggers and it also gives me an outlet to ask questions and, more importantly, to get answers. A forum will typically charge a reasonable monthly fee but it will definitely be worth it if you make it a point to participate.

10. Relax
Blogging is supposed to be fun. Hopefully this is the reason you got into blogging in the first place. So, if you can't post on a regular posting interval, don't let it consume you. Enjoy the experience and enjoy the process of writing. If you can only post once a month, make it a quality article. Quality over quantity should reign supreme when it comes to posting. Remember, your blog is your brand so don't diminish what that brand means.

Try to make some positive strides in your blogging in the coming year. Enjoy the process and make the coming year a great one for you and your blog.
