How to Build Your Blogging Credibility – While Getting Paid

Posted: 27 Feb 2011 09:12 PM PST

This is a guest post by Ali Hale. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

In your first months – or even years – of blogging, it can feel like you’re shouting into the wind.

Your traffic is almost non-existent. Your subscriber numbers are still in the double digits. Readers never email you. Bloggers never link to you. And you’re pretty sure that the “nice post, honey!” comment was left by your mom.

And you try to get some momentum going. It just doesn’t seem to work. Maybe you email a bunch of of big-time bloggers, but no-one writes back. Or you send out a guest post, but it gets turned down. Or you ask for retweets, but no-one’s listening.

The thing is, you’re a good writer. You just need a way of getting your name out there.

Well, that’s actually not too hard. In fact, you can:

  • Build up your blogging credibility
  • Improve your writing every day
  • AND … get paid at the same time.

Sounds way too good to be true? Here’s how.

Write for Big Blogs – for Money

Most large blogs use a team of paid writers to produce regular, quality content. Although Daniel doesn’t have paid staff here on Daily Blog Tips, he’s got hired hands working on Daily Writing Tips. There are thousands of blogs which pay writers – and you’re probably already reading several.

Pay rates vary, though you can certainly find plenty of gigs paying $40 or more per post. The thing is, though, getting paid to blog isn’t just about the money.

As well as getting a steady income from your writing, you’ll get some amazing exposure and experience:

  • You’ll have your name on every post you write, on big sites – and many will let you have a link back to your own blog on a “writers” page. Instead of being a complete nobody in the blogosphere, you’ll start to find that people know your name.
  • You’ll get to flex your writing muscles in front of a huge audience – often tens or hundreds of thousands of readers. Scary? You bet! But it’s also hugely motivating, and you’ll quickly learn what works and what doesn’t.
  • You’ll learn from the best. The bloggers who can afford to pay writers have build up great blogs that generate plenty of money. By studying what they do, you’ll learn how to make your own blog stronger.

Plus, you’ll have a lot of fun. My first paid blogging gig was three years ago this month (and I’m still writing for that blog, too!) It’s been a fantastic journey that led me to quit my day job, sell advertising, create ebooks and ecourses, and make a living as an entrepreneurial writer.

The only problem is, it’s pretty unlikely that anyone’s going to email you and say “Hey, I’ve got a blogging job for you.” You’re going to need to do a bit of work.

Get On Course for a Blogging Job – Today

Landing a blogging job isn’t too hard. There are a couple of key ways to do it:

#1: Build Up a Relationship With Blogs that Pay Writers

Let’s say you read FreelanceSwitch – and you’d love to write for them.

How can you tell that they use paid writers?

Well, for one thing, you’ll see the same names cropping up again and again. For instance, Thursday Bram has posts there pretty much every week.

And there’s an even bigger clue, too: the Contribute page (which tells you they pay $50 per post)

Not all blogs tell you that they use paid writers – but if you see the same name coming up every single week, it’s a fair bet that they’re being paid.

If you demonstrate your writing skills to the blog’s owner – probably by sending in a guest post or two – then there’s a good chance that they’ll be more than happy to let you know when a vacancy opens up. Current writers move on, and blogs grow, so you’ve got a good chance of scoring a blogging job this way.

Of course, you can’t normally be certain that a particular blog is looking to hire. So you might want to use the next method instead – or even better, as well.

#2: Use Job Boards to Find Blogging Jobs

There are several great listings of blogging jobs, but the two best (in my opinion) are:

Both have new jobs every day – Problogger only lists jobs which are specifically sent to them, and Freelance Writing Jobs compiles different leads from all around the internet.

It’s up to you to make sure that a job is worth your time. Some blogging jobs – particularly for big “content mills” like Demand Media – don’t pay very much. You may well need to sift through quite a few low-quality jobs to find some good ones.

When you apply for a blogging job, remember that there may be dozens or even hundreds of other writers applying too. You can maximize your chances of success by:

  • Following all the instructions. If you’re asked to attach your resume, for example, make sure you actually do so. If you’re asked to send samples of your writing, send them.
  • Proof-reading your application. Editors are looking for a way to reject unsuitable candidates, and if you look careless or sloppy, they’re not going to give your application a second glance.
  • Tailoring your application to the job. I know it’s tempting to just copy-and-paste paragraphs from a previous application – but you need to show that you’ll be great for this job. If it’s obvious that you’re just sending a form email, the editor will give the job to someone who seems to care.

You might need to apply for quite a few jobs before you get one – but trust me, the rewards are well worth it.

In six months’ time, you could be a well-known name in the blogosphere, with dozens of great posts to your name – and hundreds of enthusiastic comments from readers. Give freelance blogging a try – today.

Are Trackbaks and Pingbacks Still Useful? - DailyBlogTips

Are Trackbaks and Pingbacks Still Useful? - DailyBlogTips

Are Trackbaks and Pingbacks Still Useful?

Posted: 25 Feb 2011 04:39 AM PST

questions and answersThis post is part of the Friday Q&A section. If you want to ask a question just send it via the contact form.

Michelle asks:

Should I approve trackbacks and pingbacks? Do allowing trackbacks and pingbacks help SEO or add value to my blog/website?

Trackbacks and pingbacks were very popular some years ago, but lately fewer and fewer blogs are using them, so I suspect some of our readers don’t even know what those terms mean. They are pretty much interchangeable, and refer to a network ping that your blogging platform (e.g., WordPress or Blogger) will send to other blogs whenever you link to them. Once the other blog receives the ping it will create a link to your post on the comment section (or on a special “Trackbaks” section).

The purpose of having trackbacks and pingbacks is to foster conversations among bloggers. By inter-linking the posts that are referencing each other it becomes easier to follow the different opinions and takes on specific issues.

Initially it worked fine, and I had listed trackbacks on this blog for a long time. A couple of years ago, however, content scrapers and spammers discovered that trackbacks could be used to build backlinks. That is, they would write a post linking to hundreds of other posts around the blogosphere, and would receive a backlink from the trackback generated on each of those blogs (most links were nofollowed, but this didn’t seem to act as a deterrent).

The result was a lot of spam coming via trackbacks, and moderating it became a pain. That is why I decided to remove them from all my blogs, and most people did the same. You can still find some sites with trackbaks (sometimes called “Who’s linking here”), but they are definitely the minority.

Answering the original question now: I think having trackbacks and pingbacks does add value to your visitors, but most of that value is lost if most of your trackbacks are coming from spam and scraper sites. Given that this is probably what’s going to happen today, I would simply turn them off.

Consistency Is A Very Important SEO Factor - DailyBlogTips

Consistency Is A Very Important SEO Factor - DailyBlogTips

Consistency Is A Very Important SEO Factor

Posted: 24 Feb 2011 03:15 AM PST

If you ask people what they think is necessary to get a website ranking high for a particular keyword, most of them will mention things like an optimized title tag, unique content, backlinks and so on.

While those factors are indeed important for SEO, they will produce very small results if you don’t combine them with consistency.

That is, you could launch a new website today with a lot of unique content and many backlinks, but unless you keep adding new content and getting new links consistently over time your website, would not rank high for any competitive keyword.

The opposite is also true. Even if you launch a website with little unique content and no backlinks, you can still get it ranking high for competitive keywords if you consistently keep adding new content and getting new backlinks.

Let me illustrate this point with some numbers. Suppose we launch two websites targeting the same keyword, website A and website B. On website A we publish 50 articles right away and manage to attract 500 backlinks on the first day thanks to a viral campaign on social media sites. On website B, on the other hand, we work our way up gradually, publishing one article every other day and getting 10 new backlinks per week. After 6 months I would be willing to bet that website B is ranking higher than website A, and that is because of the consistency factor.

In fact Google confirmed in the past that the pace at which a website publishes new content and gains new backlinks is indeed used inside its algorithm.

Whenever you plan an SEO campaign for one of your sites in the future, remember that slow and steady can win the race, even on the Internet!

The Easiest Way to Make Money Online - DailyBlogTips

The Easiest Way to Make Money Online - DailyBlogTips

The Easiest Way to Make Money Online

Posted: 23 Feb 2011 01:19 AM PST

This is a post by contributing author Bamboo Forest.

I've been blogging for a couple years now and except for a few affiliate sales from ads, consulting is the only way I've made any money from blogging.

Ways to make money that might make you cry

If you told me that to make money I'd have to build websites, acquire thousands of emails for my list, have a hundred thousand monthly unique visitors for Google ads, or write an amazing eBook that must compete with the zillions of other eBooks already on the market, I'd cry.

I'm not saying you can't use the above methods to make serious money. But these methods are some of the most difficult ones with the steepest competition.

There's just got to be a better, more immediate way to make money from blogging.

And there is.

Method to make money that won't make you cry

To be a consultant all you need is a website and a PayPal account.

I've recently become a consultant through a website called Email Life Coach. This site is an extension of one of my blogs.

People hire me to help them with their life issues.

I reasoned that there are zillions of life coaches out there, but how many email life coaches are there? After all, there are definitely people who don't feel comfortable chatting on the phone but still want advice for their life. And I decided to fulfill that demand in a compelling and elegant way.

And while I haven't gotten rich from this business yet, I've certainly made far more money than anything I've ever done online to date.

What kind of consultant you could become

For starters, there needs to be a demand for the kind of consulting work you want to begin. Other than that, the sky's the limit.

You could consult others on how to improve their copy and tweak their site so they get more subscribers.

You could consult people regarding their relationship issues.

You could consult people on how to make it in Hollywood.

You could teach people Japanese.

The possibilities are endless and it's up to you to find something that's in demand that could gain you profit.

It goes without saying that your blog needs to be focused on the subject you're going to consult on. Your blog will act as a funnel to your business.

What mediums you can use to consult

The number of mediums you can currently use is really exciting.

You could be as simple and low tech as I am and use email.

Or you could do something more sophisticated such as making a client a YouTube video or chatting with them online and using a camera so you both can see each other face to face.

There is even software available now where your client can see everything on your computer, which could work well for tutoring or teaching web design.

What's required to consult successfully

While it's really easy to start a consulting business, you can't be mediocre at what you do and expect to get lots of customers or repeat business. Trying to do the aforementioned just isn't honest when people are paying you money.

I don't recommend you put a 'Hire Me" on your blog until you feel completely confident that you can offer what your service will advertise.

For example, I read a book that I found particularly helpful multiple times before I started my Email Life Coaching service because I knew I needed to become more knowledgeable about personal-development before I could help people on a higher level.

How to set your price

I recommend that when you're starting out you keep your rates low. The reason for this is twofold:

1. When starting out you have zero experience, and you'll get better at consulting as you go. In the early stages you're not qualified to ask for a higher fee.

2. Having a lower fee will help get your business rolling. Get enough business and do a good enough job and word of mouth will soon become your ally.

Why consulting is so enticing for potential customers

Because nothing beats the allure of personal attention.

For example, if you read an eBook, as amazing as it may be, it's covering a subject as a whole and not being laser focused on your specific needs.

But when people hire a consultant they're getting their exact concerns catered to.

You always hear A-List bloggers say that you need to solve people's problems if you want your blog posts to go viral. Well, as a consultant, you're in the business of doing nothing but solving people's problems and in the most intimate way possible.

The down side of consulting

While consulting is the easiest way to make money, it's not without challenge.

Daniel has already made the point that selling anything online is difficult and selling consulting is no exception.

Consulting is not the kind of profit model where you can make money in your sleep. On the contrary, with consulting, any money you make is the result of you working directly with a customer which is time consuming.

While you by no means need a popular blog to make money with consulting, you do need to have some kind of an audience. Having a strong presence in the search engines can also help you find clients. Additionally, consider having a YouTube channel to showcase your knowledge which can help you tap into an even greater audience and more potential customers.

Tips to help your consulting business thrive

Always give a money back guarantee. When offering a full money back guarantee you're removing a huge barrier to entry. Potential customers will feel secure that if they hire you and aren't satisfied with your service, they can easily get their money back.

Since I've launched my email life coaching service I haven't had a single person ask for a refund. I doubt I would have had any business at all had I not offered a full money back guarantee.

Think about it… would you hire someone you've never worked with if you knew that even if you had a terrible experience you could never get your money back?

I wouldn't.

It has been said in the business world that you make most of your money with repeat customers. It requires significant effort to find new customers, and much less effort to maintain the customers you already have.

You should reward repeat customers with a discount to promote repeat business.

Currently I charge 35 dollars for new clients and just 30 dollars for repeat clients for my month of change package.

If you've been trying for a long while to make money from blogging and haven't seen much more than a few dollars trickle in, maybe it's time to give consulting a try.

An Outsourcing Resource You Probably Never Heard About - DailyBlogTips

An Outsourcing Resource You Probably Never Heard About - DailyBlogTips

An Outsourcing Resource You Probably Never Heard About

Posted: 21 Feb 2011 10:06 PM PST

Suppose I told you I had one guy willing to work full time for you, so 40 hours per week, and that he had a good knowledge about SEO, Internet marketing and web design. What kind of salary do you think you would need to pay him?

$1,000? $1,500?

What if told you the salary he was asking for was $300?

Sounds crazy, but it’s true. I am talking about hiring people from the Philippines. There are plenty of recent graduates there who want to work from home over the Internet, and $300 (converted to the local currency) is considered a decent monthly salary.

Another advantage is that most Filipinos speak English almost fluently, and they are quite savvy when it comes to the Internet and new technologies.

At this point you might be thinking: “OK, sounds intriguing, but where can I find those workers?”

That is the resource I mentioned in the title of this post. It’s a website called OnlineJobs.ph, where you can find hundreds of Filipinos looking for online work. You’ll even find the skills they have, the monthly salary they are asking and how many hours per week they are willing to work.

You can browse the marketplace without paying anything, but if you want to see the contact details (e.g., email address) of the workers you’ll need to pay $40 for one month of access.

Before you go ahead on a hiring spree, though, here is a remark: you’ll need to spend some time researching and testing the candidates.

I have had both good and bad experiences hiring people from that site in the past. Sometimes the person worked as promised and delivered good results, but there were other times when I swear the other person was working 5 instead of 40 hours per week, and I couldn’t do anything about it except terminate the deal after the first month was up.

Still, I think it’s a valid resource if you are looking to outsource some parts of your online business.

What about you guys, what resources or websites do you use to outsource or find remote workers/collaborators?
