Here’s Where I Go for Tech News

Posted: 31 Mar 2011 04:45 AM PDT

A couple of years ago, if you asked me where I would go to get the latest tech news (tech news for web geeks, that is), I would have said Digg and Delicious. But as we all know those sites are going downhill, so where do I go now?

Lately I have been using two websites in particular.

The first one is Techmeme. I am not sure why I didn’t like and use Techmeme back in the day, but after I started checking it regularly I became addicted. Pretty much every day I’ll open its homepage once at least, and I always find something interesting to read.

The second one is Hacker News. If you are not familiar with the term, in this context hacker simply means tech geek. Sure, the stories you’ll find on this site are slightly geared towards coders and tech people, but there also many stories about entrepreneurship, web trends, gadgets and the like.

Occasionally I also check the technology section of mainstream publications like the New York Times and specialized magazines like PC World, but quite often the stuff I find there I have already seen around the web.

What about you guys, what sites do you use to get your fix of tech news?

Two Steps To Build A List of Proven Buyers - DailyBlogTips

Two Steps To Build A List of Proven Buyers - DailyBlogTips

Two Steps To Build A List of Proven Buyers

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 09:01 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Joachim Larsen. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

It's a very bad kept secret that the money is in the list. Yeah, I know, I know…You've heard it all before.

However, that doesn't change the fact that the money really is in the list! You can't get away from that fact, so if you're really serious about making money online and building a business, you need to start your list TODAY.

And even though you may not have a list yet, you've probably heard the whole process on how to do it before. Create a product yourself or get someone to create it for you, set up a squeeze page/sales page and start to generate lots of traffic to that page, and then give away the product as an incentive for people to subscribe. That's how the process is, in short.

But while building your list you should also start building relationships with your subscribers. "But how do you connect and build relationships with your list right away?".

1. Deliver Massive Value

Oone way you can do it is to simply bring MASSIVE value to the table. If you over-deliver like crazy, people will start to notice you and get their eyes up for you. If you create a product and you think it's well worth over $50 bucks, give it away for free. Yes, you read that right – FREE! That's how you over-deliver…Getting people to subscribe to your list, won't give you much money.

Then again…It's called "The Money Is IN The List".

Not in the process on getting people to subscribe TO your list. That's the difference. Because what you should focus on is to build relationships before you even think about making some money. Take it slow, take your time and build your list day by day.

2. Don’t Be Afraid To Sell Things

That said, you CAN make some money and at the same time actually solidify your relationship. And if you ask me, this is the best way to build a list – not because of the money you'll make, as it won't be a lot, but because of the kind of subscribers you’ll remain with in the end.

Let me explain…

Instead of (or in addition to) creating a product you think will be well worth over $50 that you give away for free on your squeeze page, you can create a product you think will be well worth over $200 bucks and put it up on your sales page and sell it for $27 bucks, for example. Again, this will make your customers LOVE you, because they won't believe the kind of value you've given them for the low price of $27 dollars!

So, again, you'll immediately start to connect and build relationships with your list, and my guess is that they like you and want to stay on your list to see you provide them with more high-value content and products. And that's a really good spot to be in when you're an Internet Marketer!

Another thing most people don't really think too much about is that by building your list this way you’ll remain with people who are willing to spend money and buy things that might help them. That is, you’ll get a list of proven buyers, and that is one of the most profitable assets you can have.

Good luck with your list!

7 Reasons Why Google AdSense Rocks - DailyBlogTips

7 Reasons Why Google AdSense Rocks - DailyBlogTips

7 Reasons Why Google AdSense Rocks

Posted: 29 Mar 2011 04:54 AM PDT

If you ask bloggers and webmasters what they think about Google AdSense, you’ll probably hear all sorts of answers. Some love it, some think it’s OK, and some hate it because they can’t seem to be able to make any money with it. I fall in the first group.

AdSense certainly is not suitable for all types of sites, and there are other monetization strategies that can be more profitable in some situations (e.g., selling your own products). That being said, and as far as monetizing your site with ads goes, I think AdSense is the best advertising network on the Internet. Here’s why:

1. It’s Easy to Setup and Get Started

Most ad networks require a minimum traffic level before you can join, and the application and setup process can be a pain.

AdSense, on the other hand, can be used even on small websites, and it has very few restrictions regarding where you can use it.

2. Huge Number of Advertisers

AdSense is by far the advertising network with the largest amount of advertisers. This means that you’ll get your units filled with ads pretty much every single time a visitor comes to your site.

On many other ad networks this is not true, and your earnings tend to get negatively affected.

3. Ads Are Really Targeted

Most advertising networks claim to only display ads that will match the content of your site, but few actually do it.

This is connected with the previous point. In order to be able to display targeted ads the network must have a huge collection of ads to choose from, and most networks don’t have it.

4. You Can Monetize Global Traffic

Another problem with most ad networks is that they tend to focus on US traffic. Some will pay pennies for impressions coming from outside the US, and others will not pay at all. If 50% or more of your traffic comes from other countries, you can guess that you’ll be losing money.

It’s true that on Google AdSense you also have some advertisers targeting US traffic exclusively, but there just as many targeting visitors from other countries and parts of the world.

5. The Earnings Are Pretty Good

I have seen ad networks that occasionally offered very high eCPMs (i.e., how much you actually earn for each page view on your site) but on average AdSense tends to beat most networks.

Another advatange is that AdSense earnings tend to be consistent all over the year (and over the years), while the rates you’ll get from CPM networks vary both with the season and with the overall economic climate.

6. The Ads Blend Well

Some people don’t like text links, but I think they are actually less intrusive than flashy banner ads, and it’s possible to integrate them with the design of your website without making it look ugly.

Some time ago AdSense started working with banner and video ads as well, but most of the ones you see around look very professional too.

7. Payments Are Always on Time

I had my share of problems trying to receive the money ad networks owed me. Sometimes they would pay 30 or 60 days late, other times they would pay only half of the money I was supposed to receive.

With Google AdSense I never had a problem in this regard. The payment is always sent directly to my bank account at the end of every month, and the amount is always accurate.

Over to the Readers

What is your relationship with Google AdSense? Do you love it? Hate it? Explain why with a comment below.

The Most Overlooked Reason For List Building - DailyBlogTips

The Most Overlooked Reason For List Building - DailyBlogTips

The Most Overlooked Reason For List Building

Posted: 27 Mar 2011 09:28 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Troy Broussard. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Human nature is odd some times. There is this rebellion that is inherent in our nature – something embedded in our psyche – that just compels us to do the opposite of what we’re told. You would think we would just “get over it” after childhood, but the reality is that we tend to repeat the same mistakes.

You Know The Drill

Any new blogger will tell you how important list building is. They can give you a dozen or more reasons and likely present you with a formula you should be following. You know the trick – create a great giveaway, sell the value of it, get optins, build rapport, market to your list and triple your revenue. It’s ingrained in all of us. If this is new ground to you then you should check out Email Marketing Basics: All You Need To Get Started to get the lay of the land. So if list building is such common sense, why is it that so many bloggers still don’t have a decent list?

It may be that we’ve just heard it too many times and refuse to accept it, or it may be that from the same message being constantly preached at us we just brush it off as hype. If I’m speaking to you personally, well, it’s because I too went through the same evolution. Maybe it was because it seemed such a daunting task at first, but the likelihood is that it is for another reason – pride.

Don’t Let Your Ego Hold You Back

Our ego doesn’t want to start off and build slow and grow over time. Our ego wants 5,000 people on our list overnight and so many – like me – let that hold them back from getting started. There is this notion that until you have a big list, talking about it is almost embarrassing. But the reality is, list building, like blogging, or link building or traffic building is something that takes time and effort and the sooner you get that small snowball started, the sooner you can roll it down the hill.

Don’t Procrastinate

My business partner and I fell into that same trap. We focused our efforts on “building traffic” on the site before starting in on the list building – big mistake. The problem is the longer you wait, the more of a pink elephant it becomes and the worse you tend to procrastinate about doing it. Well, let me tell you right now, you don’t want to make that mistake.

We’ve all seen the many benefits of list building as they are commonly presented, but most of these benefits tend to be discussed in financial terms. How list building can double your income through back end sales – that’s the #1 reason you hear everywhere for getting started. And it’s true. In fact in our own experience we can attest to those types of rough numbers – generally a doubling or more of our sales after we started to develop a meaningful list.

Here It Is

The fact is, however, that there is one huge benefit to list building that I rarely see mentioned at all – increased traffic. It seems so obvious and perhaps that is why it is overlooked. But over time you can significantly change the traffic patterns on your site via list building. Rather than being a passive recipient of visitors you can instead direct traffic at will as your list grows.

Let’s say you have a site that generates about a 100 unique visitors a day and you begin to really concentrate on your list building. You create a great giveaway and optimize your site towards getting optins. Now, just for purposes of the example, let’s say you only get about 5 people a day to optin to your list – that’s a small 5% of your traffic. We’ve seen much better percentages and worse – the numbers will vary dramatically based upon how targeted your giveaway is to the needs of your reader, your niche, your site design (is it really geared towards getting you optins?) and many other factors including the catchy title and subject of your giveaway. Another factor that can really impact your optin percentage is the quality of the eCover artwork. Sounds picky, yes, but it’s true.

Do The Math

Now just 5 optins a day doesn’t seem like much, but remember, Rome wasn’t built in a day. Let’s extrapolate that out over the course of a month and say that it nets you 125 optins a month (after those who unsubscribe). And then let’s go ahead and fast forward about 5 months and assume you have around 700 people on your list (we’ll assume you got a little better at it over time). Here’s where the fun begins.

What begins to emerge is a shift in your traffic patterns. As you send out a broadcast or a pre-programmed autoresponder, you will get a percentage of people who will then come to your site and check out the blog post you mentioned or the product you reviewed, etc. With a list of 700 and assuming a 10% click thru (we often see numbers in the 25% to 40% range, but let’s keep it conservative here) that’s another 70 visitors coming to your site. For a site getting only a 100 unique daily visitors, an additional 70 off a single email is pretty impressive.

Be Patient

Now the effects of this will be small at first and will take time to build up – just like your list will take time to build. In fact it will probably sneak up on you and at some point you will wonder where this additional traffic is coming from. Another factor that will influence how quickly you begin to see this trend in your analytics is the approach you take to engaging your list. Some prefer to simply send broadcasts, but for others less disciplined or time constrained, they choose to simply create an autoresponder and let it drip feed the messages out over time.

With today’s sophisticated autoresponders such as Aweber, you can actually do both as well. For example you can have an autoresponder and set it up to only send out on Thursdays so that the rest of the week is reserved for you to send out a broadcast as well (on Tuesday perhaps).

Depending upon your method, you will see different traffic patterns emerge. If you want to see how the list can affect your traffic the quickest, use the broadcast approach. This way each time you send out a broadcast , your entire list will be seeing it all at once and the traffic response will be more pronounced. When we first set this up on one of our sites, we had it all programmed into an autoresponder and it took us longer to really observe the gradual growth in traffic that was occurring. Either way the net result is the same – more traffic. Over time your list can become a very valuable traffic driving commodity for you. This can give you many options that you currently just don’t have.

Lessen Your Dependence On Search

Recently the Google Farmer update hurt a lot of sites. Now, most bloggers weren’t affected as they tend to write all original (or mostly original) content and these scraper targeted algorithm changes didn’t likely have much impact on them. But we all know that Google is constantly refining the algorithm and that at any time we could lose – even if temporary – significant traffic to these changes. It’s not uncommon to see traffic fall way off for a period of 5 to 10 days when an algorithm change has got sites bouncing all over the place and several data centers down while others are being updated. But if you’ve got a big list, you can remain in control of a significant portion of your traffic. So, rather than depending on Google for scraps, you can still command a significant audience.

Summary

Of course all of the old reasoning for list building still applies. List building will still forge more rapport with your readers and make marketing to them much more profitable (especially if you’re marketing your own products or services). List building also has many other positive impacts on your site development and they all increase the bottom line. But just in case you needed one more reason to get off the proverbial couch and get your own list started, list building can become a hidden gem of your own traffic on demand if you just give the chance and get started!

When Choosing a Domain Name, Think About the Future

Posted: 25 Mar 2011 05:29 AM PDT

questions and answersThis post is part of the Friday Q&A section. If you want to ask a question just send it via the contact form.

Kaitlin asks:

I thought of a great blog name, but the .com is already taken by a pizza business. For clarity's sake, let's say the domain is BigSlice.com, and I want to start a blog that has nothing to do with pizza (a lifestyle blog) that's called "Big Slice." My question is: Would you ever buy a domain like BigSliceBlog.com if BigSlice.com isn't available, or would you give up on the name?

The answer is no. I probably wouldn’t buy a domain like BigSliceBlog.com for one single reason: it limits the scope of what you can do with that site, and it also limits how far and wide you can expand it in the future.

Let me illustrate this point with a different example. Suppose you want to start a blog about funny and humorous T-shirts. You decide you want to call it “T-shirt Spot”. That domain, however, is already taken, so you end up going with TshirtSpotBlog.com. Fast forward a couple of years and your blog is really popular, and every time you write about a specific T-shirt a lot of people end up buying it.

You figure it would be a good idea to transform the blog into an online store to sell the T-shirts, moving the blog itself to a sub-folder (e.g., domain.com/blog). It’s a great idea indeed, but you would have some problems branding the store because your domain is TshirtSpotBlog.com. In other words, you got trapped by your domain, which is limiting the scope of your site. Had you decided to use something more generic like TshirtSpot.com, you would now be able to expand the site in any direction.

If the domain you want is already registered, therefore, keep looking until you find something you are really happy with, because the domain is one of the few factors you won’t be able to change on your website.

Finally, remember that it’s also possible to buy registered domain names. You just need to contact the current owner and make an offer. Sometimes with as few as $200 you can buy great domain names, and this will be one of the best investments you can make.

How to Take Your Writing to The Next Level - DailyBlogTips

How to Take Your Writing to The Next Level - DailyBlogTips

How to Take Your Writing to The Next Level

Posted: 24 Mar 2011 03:48 AM PDT

While there are multiple factors that determine whether a blogger attracts a huge audience, nobody will argue that producing great content isn't an absolute requirement.

And let's face it, producing great content is an enormous undertaking. If we were only one of few blogs on the interwebs, getting attention for what we write would be easy.

The reality, however, is there are multitudes of really talented and dedicated bloggers out there and we have no choice but to go toe-to-toe with them.

The following methods will help you better compete with the competition.

Let your writing stew

Could you imagine putting all the ingredients for lamb stew into a big pot and consuming it five minutes later?

It probably wouldn't taste anywhere near its best.

Writing often follows this same formula.

The more days you can dedicate to a single post the better the final product will be.

I often write humor which is a great challenge because you aren't just conveying information but you must also elicit laughter from your readers. I've discovered that spending multiple days on a single post makes the finished product much funnier.

When you write a single piece over a couple days you give yourself the opportunity to add and subtract information you otherwise wouldn't have if you were to write and publish it in the same day. This makes your final product reach its ultimate potential.

Always publish your best stuff now

Never, ever save your best stuff for later.

If you don't want to publish your finest material because you have a small audience then submit it as a guest post.

By committing to publishing your best material now you're enhancing your writing capacity.

In the comment section of this Copyblogger post, Raul Sim wrote:

“Holding your best ideas keep your head stuck on that ideas. Without publishing them you can't generate new greater ideas, because you are full. You have to let your brain flow for even better ideas. Don't hesitate to publish your best ideas!”

Believe you're a great writer

I have recently become very inspired with my humor blog and you know what I'm telling myself all the time?

I'm truly hilarious.

While it's true I've occasionally had people tell me that my writing is hilarious (booya baby!) others may think my writing isn't funny.

The truth, however, is all that matters is what you tell yourself. You need to get pumped up about your writing. You need to love what you do and believe in it.

If you begin to doubt your capability it will show in your attitude and you'll lose motivation which will diminish how well you write and how much you write.

I'm not saying that believing you're a great writer will magically turn you into one.

What I am saying, however, is that what you believe about your writing will impact the quality of your writing.

Anthony Robbins writes:

“Once accepted, our beliefs become unquestioned commands to our nervous system, and they have the power to expand or destroy the possibilities of our present and future.”

To put this another way, Henry Ford once said:

"If you think you can do a thing or think you can’t do a thing, you’re right."

While it's true there's much competition out there, it's also true there are strategies we can use to take our writing to the next level.

How Planning Helps Your Blogging - DailyBlogTips

How Planning Helps Your Blogging - DailyBlogTips

How Planning Helps Your Blogging

Posted: 23 Mar 2011 12:25 AM PDT

This is a guest post by Dia T. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

"If you fail to plan, you plan to fail."

Do you plan? How important is planning in regards to blogging?

You probably know that having a plan is crucial to your success in everything in life including blogging. When it comes to blogging, you have to know what you are doing and where you are going.

Anyone nowadays can make a blog, put on some posts and starts to work on getting more traffic and make the blog popular. However, if you goal is to have your own e-business online then it is very imperative to have a plan and a vision to where you are going.

1. Plan your posts

Planning your posts is crucial. You should try to have posts that are ready for publishing for a minimum of one week. You never know what could happen in a week as you might get sick, go on a vacation, or get busy with family, among other things. This is why planning your posts in advance is a crucial part if you want your blog and e-business to flourish.

2. Plan to create products

If you want to succeed in your blog and e-business, then you probably want to create your own products. You would earn way more than marketing someone else's products if your goal is to make money. It is crucial to know what products you are going to release this year and how much time it takes you to complete each product.

Personally, I know the products that I'm going to be releasing this year including how long it will take me to finish each product. Having a written plan is half the work.

3. Plan your time

One of the major excuses I hear is that bloggers say they don't have enough time to write posts more frequently, find time to write their own products. The truth is you do have time. For instance, if you spend one hour a day writing content for your product, that is around 30 hours a month. You would be surprised what you can accomplish with those hours.
If you don't manage your time correctly, then you will not be able to work on creating posts and products in a timely manner, which could harm your blog and e-business. Time management is crucial to the success of every business.

4. Plan how to market strategically

Are you going to use social media to market your blog and e-business? If so, how often? Are you going to work on writing guest posts? Are you going on building relationships with other bloggers? These are all questions that have to be taken into consideration.

Having a strategic plan is crucial to your success online. Many seem to create blogs without having a clear marketing plan. Think about it, if you don't have a specific plan, how can you succeed at your blog or e-business? The more you spend time marketing, the more traffic you will get.

What Digg Did Wrong - DailyBlogTips

What Digg Did Wrong - DailyBlogTips

What Digg Did Wrong

Posted: 22 Mar 2011 04:41 AM PDT

A couple of months ago I wrote a post asking if social bookmarking sites like Digg and Delicious were dying. It looks like they are. This week the tech press revealed that Kevin Rose, Digg’s founder, is abandoning ship and moving on to a new startup. Traffic is also down by almost 50% compared to its peak, so tech blogs are declaring Digg pretty much dead.

But what happened exactly to Digg, and what mistakes did it do, as it once was one of the most popular and respected Web 2.0 startups? In fact at one point Google was intended to buy it for around $200 million, but the deal fell apart in the last minute.

If you want to understand the whole thing there is a very interesting article at Computer World titled Why Digg Failed. Here is a quotation:

Digg content categories were crazy.

Digg is about content, and content needs to be categorized. For most of its existence, Digg categorization was bizarre and heavily biased according to the founder’s semi-adolescent world view. For example, “Tech” was a category. And so was “Apple.” Why was one company singled out for special treatment? There were no categories for things like “Religion” or “Research,” but six categories for gaming.

Digg has improved content categories by offering fewer, more general ones. But its “Media type” categories are “News,” “Image” and “Video.” The first isn’t a media type, but a content type. For example, video can be news, Why isn’t it “Text,” instead of “News.” And why shut out “Audio”?

Digg has always struggled with simple categorization.

The article also mentions how Digg had a bias against blog content, and how ended up alienating bloggers from its user base, which certainly hurt its popularity. Worth a read.

5 Things You Need To Be Prepared For When Starting A Blog

Posted: 20 Mar 2011 10:37 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Mark Riddix. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

So, you want to start a blog?

Becoming a blogger can be an adventurous and exciting endeavor. The entire process can be an adrenaline rush as you think about all of the visitors and ad dollars that will be coming your way. It sounds like the perfect career. While blogging can be a printable profession, there are however a few things that you need to be prepared for when you start blogging.

Let's take a look at the top 5.

1. Guest Post Rejection

Every blogger will tell you that you need to write guest posts to attract more viewers to your site. While this is true, it can be difficult for a new blogger to be approved for a guest post on a larger site. If you get rejected by a big blog, don't take it personally. Keep trying! You can always write guest posts for small and medium sized blogs. This will give you examples of your published works that you can show to bigger blogs. Eventually the larger blogs will open up their doors to you as well.

2. Delayed Monetization

There are lots of bloggers making money online. Most of them have been blogging for years and know exactly what it takes to monetize a blog. Most of the successful bloggers that I know learned a lot through trial and error. Finding out the best way to monetize your website takes time. Your blog may do well selling ads or it may be more suited for affiliate marketing. The only way to figure out what works best for your site is through experimentation. Don't obsess over making money the first month or two. Spend that time figuring out your monetization strategy.

3. The Give Up Moment

Every blogger faces that moment. It's the time when you ask yourself, why am I blogging? You get tired of writing posts day after day that no one reads. You start slacking off on your posting and blogging becomes less and less important. Your blog isn't bringing in any money and you just want to give up. This is the moment that separates the bloggers that will make it from the ones that won't. The key to surviving the give up moment is to push through and keep churning out content regardless of how you may feel at that moment. If you give up, you will never know how things would have turned out.

4. Traffic Plateau

Another obstacle that bloggers face is hitting a traffic plateau. It's exciting to see your blog growing and gaining new readers. There comes a point when every website will experience a lull at some point. When this happens to you, you need to come up with creative ways to boost your traffic. You can try hosting a blog carnival, sponsoring a cash giveaway or making deal with similar blogs to cross promote posts. You can take time everyday and comment on different blogs which will help bring traffic to your site. All of these are great ways to give your blog a boost.

5. Content Criticism

One of the things that comes along with building a successful blog is criticism. You will be criticized as you grow your blog. Some readers will leave comments disagreeing with and even criticizing your posts. Other bloggers may criticize you for trying to duplicate the success of another blogger. These are all good things however because it's all traffic to your website. If someone comes to your website to criticize you, it means that they are reading your posts. A little criticism can do wonders for increasing the popularity of a post.

Final Thoughts
These are all experiences that I went through when I first started blogging in 2008. You will be prepared to deal with many of these blogging hiccups by knowing what to look for in advance.
