What Programming Language to Learn First? - DailyBlogTips

What Programming Language to Learn First? - DailyBlogTips

What Programming Language to Learn First?

Posted: 28 Apr 2011 10:43 AM PDT

Some of you will remember that last year I made a resolution: to learn programming. I have not written about it, but I have been sticking to this resolution ever since.

In fact I have put most of my websites on auto-pilot, so that I just need to spend one or two hours working every day (i.e., 30 minutes answering emails, 30 minutes doing general maintenance tasks, and 30 to 60 minutes researching and writing a post for DBT). The rest of the time I am either coding, reading programming/math books, or attending lessons on a local university (I’ll talk about this on a future post).

I know there are many readers who would like to learn programming as well, so occasionally I’ll write a post about what I am doing, what worked for me, what didn’t work and so on. I had plans to start a new blog completely dedicated to this topic, but I figured this would take away time from coding, so I dropped the idea.

Today I want to talk about the first decision I had to make when learning to code, which is what programming language to learn first.

If you are going to college then you don’t need to worry too much about this question. The college will pretty much pick a language for you (e.g., some start with C, some with Python, some with Java and so on).

If you are going to learn programming by yourself, at least initially, then you need to think twice before making your decision, because the language choice will certainly affect your progress, and if you pick the wrong one you might lose motivation along the way.

I spent a great deal of time researching on the Internet, and if you do the same you’ll find that the discussions about the best first programming language are quite heated! After some days researching I decided that Python was the right choice for me. The reasons for going with Python as a first language were:

  • Python is a very high level language, which means it comes with a lot of functions and abstractions out of the box. This means you can spend more time thinking about programming logic and algorithms, and less time thinking about correct syntax.
  • Python is a general-purpose language, which means you can use it to create virtually any type of program or software, from web scripts to games. This means you should be able to use it to code projects you are actually interested in.
  • Python is an interpreted language, which means you won’t need to waste time learning how to compile code. You simply downloaded an integrated development environment (IDE), write your code and press “Run.”
  • There is a huge amount of programming books, videos and courses online that use Python as their language choice.
  • Python is used in the real world as well. Some very large companies like Google and Facebook use it on my parts of their platforms and products.

I have already moved to a new language (C), but looking back I still think that starting with Python was a smart choice. It’s like learning to drive first (i.e., coding in Python) and only then taking a look at the engine under the hood to understand how the machine actually works (i.e., coding in C or even Assembly if you want to get close to the iron).

I don’t think Python is the absolute best language to learn first, though. It depends on your goals. If you are planning to make a living writing code (either for you or for someone else) then I believe starting with Python is a great idea. After you know the basics of programming logic and algorithms you can start using lower level languages like C, and after that you can start using Object Oriented ones like C++ or Java (technically Python also offers object orientation, but I wouldn’t play with that if you are just getting started).

If you have a narrower plan, you probably should start with a language more specific to the problems you want to solve. If you want to learn programming exclusively to tweak WordPress or to create WordPress plugins, then I think starting with PHP would be smarter, as it’s pretty much the only language you’ll need to use in the future.

Similarly, if you just want to develop iPhone apps, I would recommend getting a basic understand of the C language, and then move straight to Objective-C, which is the main language used to build iPhone apps.

Finally, Java is also considered to be a good option as a first programming language. It has the advantage of introducing you to object orientation right away, and it’s also one of the most popular languages around the world.

Next week I’ll talk about the resources I used to start learning programming logic and Python.

Reduce Your Bounce Rate In One Second - DailyBlogTips

Reduce Your Bounce Rate In One Second - DailyBlogTips

Reduce Your Bounce Rate In One Second

Posted: 26 Apr 2011 11:39 AM PDT

So, how do you get visitors to spend more time on your site and reduce your bounce rate, without spending more than one second trying to do it?

It’s simple.

First of all get inside the control panel of your website (e.g., WordPress admin dashboard, or the equivalent on the software you are using). Now go to the section where you can tweak your CSS and other design aspects (in WordPress this is under the “Appearance” menu). Now find the line controlling the font size on your site, and increase it. That is it!

There are many case studies around the web where people used A/B testing to find how they could reduce the bounce rate, and increasing the font size works on most situations.

Just consider that the population in most developed countries is getting older and older, and that more and more people need to stare at a computer screen all day long for professional reasons (meaning our eyes are getting tired).

Then combine that with larger screen resolutions (where you have more pixels on the screen, but the actual appearance of the graphics gets smaller) and you get web visitors who would love to find a big large font on your site, so that they can read your awesome content comfortably.

And yes, I did increase the font on Daily Blog Tips a couple of months ago. It used to be 12, now it’s 13, and the bounce rate improved slightly.

Why You Should Use “You” and “I” In Your Posts - DailyBlogTips

Why You Should Use “You” and “I” In Your Posts - DailyBlogTips

Why You Should Use “You” and “I” In Your Posts

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 08:49 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Ali Luke. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Two tiny words will help you build instant rapport with your readers: I and you.

If you're used to writing essays for school or business reports, you've probably been taught to avoid writing "I". But online, readers expect – and want – informal, conversational writing which speaks to them directly.

I'm guessing that you'd like more repeat traffic, more comments, more tweets and more subscribers. That means learning how to use "you" and "I" effectively, so that you draw readers in – rather than turning them off.

Using "You" and "Your"

If you look at recent posts on Daily Blog Tips, you'll see that many of them include the word "You" or "Your". They have titles like:

Would these titles be so engaging if they didn't use "you" and "your"?

I don't think so – and I expect you'd agree. The "you" and "your" make the posts personal, not generic. Try working one of those words into your next blog post title – and see what happens.

The biggest mistake I see bloggers making with "you" is to make it plural. They'll write things like:

  • "Some of you may be wondering…"
  • "Most of you are writers…"
  • "There are hundreds of you reading this blog…"

Each reader is reading on their own. Your readers are not gathered in an auditorium, listening to you read your post out loud – so it jars them to read the plural "you". Make your readers feel special: write as if you're speaking to just one person.

When to avoid "you"

There's one clear case for avoiding the word "you" – and that's when you're writing something negative or critical. For instance, change "You're a chronic procrastinator" to "Some people are chronic procrastinators."

Using “I”

It's perfectly appropriate to use "I" when you're writing about your own experiences or opinions. You might worry that too much "me me me" will bore the reader – but a well-chosen personal anecdote can bring life to a post.

You might consider sharing:

  • Some of your own failures and frustrations. ("I find it hard not to procrastinate.") This helps make the reader feel that you're on their side.
  • Your personal success story – with an emphasis on the idea that "you can do this too."
  • Brief snippets about your life. With so many blogs to choose from, readers stay engaged because they feel like they know you as a person.

Make sure you're delivering value to the reader, too: you're not writing a personal diary. If I'm writing a very "I"-centered post, I try to bring out clear points which apply to the reader's life too.

When to avoid "I"

If you want to sound authoritative, too much use of phrase like "I think" or "I believe" can weaken your post. Readers know that what you're writing is your opinion – you don't need to keep saying so.

Over to you … do you have any experiences to share about using "I" and "you" in your posts? Have these little words helped you build engagement, or do you struggle to use them effectively?

4 Internet Marketing Strategies You Must Know - DailyBlogTips

4 Internet Marketing Strategies You Must Know

Posted: 21 Apr 2011 05:03 AM PDT

I was browsing through my RSS reader today and came across an interesting post from my friend Glen Allsopp, titled The Post Your Fellow Bloggers Don’t Want You to Read.

The post basically lists four Internet marketing strategies that few bloggers are aware of. In fact one of them was completely new to me as well, and I have been working in this industry for many years. The idea is simple but pretty clever: to put a customer testimonial on your Paypal checkout page. Here is a quotation from the article:

Strategy Three: The Paypal Checkout Testimonial

One thing I've noticed with product launches – especially the Cloud Blogging launch – is that a lot of people will click on our Buy Now button, but not actually purchase the item. There is a measure for this called the "Cart Abandonment Rate" and our CAR was as high as 90% on some occasions.

I spoke with a few people on this topic, and watched some relevant marketing material, and was told that I should add a step between the sale and the Add to Cart screen. The reason people are more likely to click on an Add to Cart button in the first place is because it doesn't imply commitment compared to words like Buy Now!.

Therefore, if you're sending that traffic to an instant payment page, they often back out of the deal. The step, they told me, was a good place to insert product testimonials so further convince people that your offering is good.

Instead of adding an entirely new page, I took advantage of a little known feature in Paypal. The ability to add your own header to the Paypal payment pages. In this header I used a testimonial from one of our customers. Thanks to this, our cart abandonment rate has decreased dramatically.

If want to learn the other three strategies make sure to read the full article.

How I Started Making Thousands of Dollars from My Blog in Less Than 8 Months - DailyBlogTips

How I Started Making Thousands of Dollars from My Blog in Less Than 8 Months

Posted: 19 Apr 2011 08:02 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Onibalusi Bamidele. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

I started my blog, YoungPrePro, on the 2nd of April 2010. My blog is only 8 months and it is already making me thousands of dollars every month. For example, in the month of December alone I made over $2000 from my blog. This is a very small income compared to what the likes of Darren are making but I'm sure most newbies will be curious to know how I'm able to achieve that in only 8 months of starting my blog.

Making money blogging is no rocket science but it is all about you playing your cards well and this post will be talking about how I started making money from my blog in only eight months.

1. It Starts From the Mind

Those of us who have read Napoleon Hill's Think and Grow Rich will know the importance of the mind to achieving success in life.

A lot of people will begin to respect you once they see that you're making thousands of dollars online every month but very few of them want to hear about your journey towards it. Life is not a bed of roses, and blogging also is not. To every great destination there is a rough road, you must scale this road successfully before you can achieve true success.

I didn't make much money from my blog until after eight months of me starting it and if not for me being resolute about succeeding I will have quitted blogging since.

Napoleon Hill will always advise that you visualize your success before you even achieve it. It is so true that our mind can make us rich because anyone who's strongly determined about success will surely succeed and “tenacity” starts from the mind.

As a new blogger who's yet to achieve anything, start by visualizing what your blog will be in the next 1, 2 and 5 years. See it clearly, believe it, plan it and execute your plan towards making it a reality. There is no point in you working on achieving what you don't believe because you won't even go far before you quit. Your blogging success starts from your mind so you have to strongly believe you will succeed before you even get started.

2. Having Goals is Important

Very few bloggers realize the importance of having goals and I'm sure I'd have quitted blogging long before I achieved anything if not for my goals.

What is success? We all have different definitions for success but I believe success is achieving your goals. Once you're able to achieve your blogging goal you can begin to call your blog a success and that's why it's highly important to have goals before you start blogging.

There are many times I will feel like quitting blogging, it is very difficult to motivate myself during these periods because I have no achievements to keep me motivated but after taking a look at my goals I will begin to imagine what will happen to my blog if I stop it.

I have a lot of great goals for my blog; I see it having a very bright future and nothing can stop me from achieving this. I simply look back to my goals whenever I'm demotivated and I get the strength and courage to continue from nowhere.

3. You Must Have a Plan

There are several plans serving several purposes but to truly succeed as a blogger you have to make sure you have a solid plan to follow.

You shouldn't just start your plan and expect it to make you money; everything has to be organized from day 1 of you starting your blog.
From the onset you should know how you will promote your blog; you should also know how you will monetize your blog.

There are several reasons why you should have a plan but a major reason why you should have a plan is that it gives you direction to help make your blog a success. You shouldn't just expect to achieve success by doing things how it comes; know what you will do first and what you will do after and it will be easy to succeed. For example, if your plan is to monetize your blog from the onset you can monetize it and begin to learn new ways to improve your income while building its community at the same time but if your plan is to monetize your blog only after you have a successful community around your blog it is highly important to make sure you follow that plan to the end.

Aside having a plan you should also make sure you're ready to learn new things and modify your plan. For example, my favorite way of marketing my blog is by writing for other people's blog but I didn't discover this strategy until after one month of me starting my blog. If I had been resolute about not modifying my blogging plan I wouldn't have implemented this strategy and it will end up costing me thousands of visitors.

It is good to follow your plan strictly but always make sure you're receptive to change.

4. Market Yourself

There is no point in you starting a blog if nobody will read it because you can only make money from your blog if you have an audience. It is highly important not to just sit down waiting for traffic to come but do your best to go out and spread the word about your blog.

I have written 100's of guest posts this year alone and this alone has contributed to over half of my blogging success. Your content can be great but no one will discover you if you're not marketed. There are several ways to market your blog and below are my favorites:

  • Guest Blogging: If I was asked to name one single strategy I can attribute my blogging success to it will be guest blogging (check my guide here). I wrote several 100 guest posts in 2010 only, some of these guest posts sent me thousands of visitors while others sent me hundreds but every single one of these guest posts contributed to my success. Writing guest posts for other blogs also helps you boost your credibility because your name will have popped up everywhere and people will begin to see you as a go to person in your niche.
  • Blog Commenting: A widely used method for building traffic to a blog is blog commenting and one major reason why people use this is because of its effectiveness. I have gotten a lot of emails from my readers telling me they discovered my blog from my comment on another blog and this method alone greatly contributed to the traffic of my blog.

5. Develop Exceptional Content

While there is nothing bad in writing about the same topic/subject people are writing about everyday it is highly important that you give your blog posts your own unique spin. People want to know what makes you different from other bloggers in your niche and the only way to show them this is by giving them the best of your content.

I noticed that I get a lot of emails from people wanting to thank me, wanting me to offer them my services and from people wanting to interview me when I write my best content. People have a true sense of appreciation if you can be giving them truly exceptional content and you'll be amazed what heights your blog will reach in no time if you do this.

How To Outource Your Lead Magnet or eBook - DailyBlogTips

How To Outource Your Lead Magnet or eBook - DailyBlogTips

How To Outource Your Lead Magnet or eBook

Posted: 17 Apr 2011 08:07 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Edwin. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Having a lead magnet is a quick and easy way to get new blog subscribers. People love getting things and they love getting things even more when they read the word FREE labeled on it.

Did you know the money is in the list? Now I know you have probably heard that saying a million times before in the past and want to butcher it but calm down. No matter how much you might hate it, having an email list is necessary to propel your sites success forward.

The bigger the list the more money, the more traffic you can generate for your business. If you are looking for a one click way to make money online, an email list is your solution. Once you have set everything up you can literally just write a simple email, click submit and wait for the results to happen.

If you are wondering how to get subscribers you first must offer them something first. This is called a bribe. First of all lets get into the perspective of the possible prospects mind. Would you rather enter your email into a site if you were going to get something in return or if you were getting nothing out of it? Now a days with the increasing spam people aren’t just going to enter their email into a form. It isnt that simple, they are more wary of such things.

An easy thing you can do for your lead magnet is to make a short ebook covering something in your niche. Your ebook can answer a question, give tips or explain a certain topic.

If you are too busy and just don’t have time to make an ebook there are two things you can do. The first thing is you can get a few of your past articles that you’ve written (hopefully they are talking about similar things) and compile them into a quick ebook. For example if you are in the weight loss niche and you have a few fat loss articles that you’ve written prior you can get them, put them together in a PDF file, and call it something like ‘Fat Loss Tips For Dummies’. You have just made your own lead magnet in less than 20 minutes.

Now if doing the above is too much of a chore you can always outsource. Outsourcing means you get other people to do the tasks for you. Basically, you can outsource anything. In our case we are going to outsource a bribe for your email list.

I am going to recommend a few sites where you can outsource different things in your lead magnet.

Lets begin shall we?

Ebook Concept

Now we are going to brainstorm the idea of your e-Book. Go grab your self a notepad and write down your main niche or market in big letters at the top. Now begin writing down common problems in your niche.

For example if we go back to the weight loss example people want to lose weight, increase productivity, get more active, lose body fat and the list goes on. Pick any one of your niches problems and choose one that you would want to write on.

Ebook Cover

99 Designs: 99 Designs is a large site filled with thousands of designers ready to do work for you! They do everything from logo to t-shirt designs.
Fiverr: Fiverr is a relatively new site with a really cool concept. People offer to do any task for the cheap cost of five bucks. Yes that was not a typo! People will do things from being a tour guide, to holding up a sign in Times Square or in our case an ebook. If you think about it you can get the ebook and design done for ten bucks. Not bad if you ask me.

Ebook Content

Elance: Elance lets you outsource everything from the ebook cover to the actual content itself. If you want they can also market the ebook for you as well. This site seriously lets you outsource every little thing you want in your lead magnet or business.

Odesk: oDesk lets you outsource all your online projects. You only pay people by the hour so there wont be any hassles when it comes down to payment. Odesk seems like a great solution for long term things or more complex projects.

Conclusion

Make sure to check out all the sites listed above and see which one/s you like best. Remember to always take action because every day you wait, every day you are wasting money.

Do you guys recommend any other outsourcing site that I did not mention? Also, do you have any experience with the websites that were on the list? Please share in the comment section below.

41 Things This Dude Learned By 40

People learn many things as the years go by, and they often want to share those things. That is why you see many “X Things I learned by Y” posts around the web. The one I came across this week is quite interesting, though.

The title is 41 Things I’ve Learned by 40, and here is the beginning of the list:

41. Don’t worry too much about what others think about you.

40. Everyone has an ego. Tread lightly as to not bruise them.

39. Nothing produces results as much as taking action.

38. Don’t gossip. What you say will always find its way back to the person.

37. People do business with people they know and like.

36. Jealous and petty people are just part of life.

35. Say “please” and “thank you”. It will make you stand out from the crowd.

34. When you need help, ask someone.

33. Having written goals is an important step you achieving your dreams.

32. Over using credit cards will stall your financial future.

31. A supportive spouse is worth her weight in gold, and then some.

30. A true friend is excited for you about any event that makes you happy.

Some points apply to the professional side of things, others to the personal one. Still should be a good read for a Friday, so check it out.
