Two Announcements from Google to Pay Attention

Posted: 30 Jun 2011 05:53 AM PDT

If you haven’t been following the tech news scene lately Google made two announcements that all bloggers and website owners should pay attention to.

The first one is called +1, and it’s basically a button you use to recommend stuff around the web. Google says that “the +1 button is shorthand for “this is pretty cool” or “you should check this out.” Click +1 to publicly give something your stamp of approval. Your +1′s can help friends, contacts, and others on the web find the best stuff when they search.”

The button appears both on pages inside websites as well as directly in the search results. Why you should pay attention to this? Because clicks on +1 buttons are going to start influencing search results, so might start playing a role in your search engine optimization. If you want to add it to your site here’s the page to get the code.

The second announcement is called Google+ (I know, they need to hire someone to come up with better names…). This one is Google’s attempt to start a real social network around its services and online properties. I recommend reading Search Engine Land’s coverage of the topic if you want to know more about it.

Here’s a quotation:

What about the product itself? Google dubs Google+ as a "project" rather than a product, stressing it's part of making Google itself more social rather than being a standalone social network to take on Facebook.

"It's 'Plus' because it takes products from Google and makes them better and 'project' because it's an ongoing set of products," said Vic Gundotra, the senior vice president who oversees Google's social products.

I’ll keep you guys updated as I find more about those two new products/projects.

How to Build an Email List that Makes Money

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 10:57 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Onibalusi. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

I recently sent an email to my list of 1500 subscribers promoting a particular product not that relevant to my email list, that single email made me five sales. Since that was one of the very few serious promotions I did to my email list I figured out building a solid email list of responsive buyers could be a great source of income and I have decided to share my approach to it.

Before I get started I’d also like you to know that my approach was inspired by the CloudBlueprint System by Glen Allsopp so you should make sure to check it out if you really want to learn more about earning money online mainly by list building.

Finding a Market

The first step to building a solid email list that will be making you money is finding a market. Since most of us are bloggers this shouldn’t be difficult since you can easily create an email list based on what you blog about or based on a particular topic you’re experiencing quick success with.

Every market has a need and as a marketer it is your duty to understand what their needs are. It is also important that you know that you can’t build a general list or a list that covers every topic because you will end up pissing people off so it is always advisable to look for one topic you’re an expert at, try to narrow down the market a little bit and then create an email list for it.

Understand Your Market

Another important thing you need to do when trying to make money from your email list as a blogger is to understand your market. I have seen first hand that this is very critical to succeeding when building an email list because at a point when I was still at 150 subscribers I once made a promotion to my list that brought $50, at 1000 subscribers I made another promotion that brought in $0 and at 1500 subscribers I made a promotion that brought in over $200. What I noticed is that even though the size of your list is very important you can’t just make money by promoting any product to your list.

For example, in some niches people love buying products that are cheap (say $37 or less) and in some niches people are okay with buying products that are expensive (in fact they won’t buy low priced product because they think it is of less value) so you need to have a great understanding of your market, what they want, how they spend and why they joined your list in the first place as this will help you know how to effectively deliver your content to them and also how to ensure they buy any product you recommend.

Create a Lead Magnet

Even though some people will argue against having a lead magnet I have noticed that having one is very important and can make an impact in how much subscribers you get. For me I was able to more than double my blog’s daily subscription rate just by adding a lead magnet related to my niche.

A lead magnet is a product (it can be in the form of an eBook or e-course) that is designed as an incentive to make people join your email list. It is highly important that your lead magnet is targeted and related to your niche and in case you want an example of a perfect lead magnet you can take a look at Daniel’s eBook on How to Make Money Blogging.

It is also very important to create a lead magnet that is based on your expertise, for example, people are more likely to subscribe to Daniel’s newsletter to download his free eBook on how to make money blogging because he is an expert who already makes money blogging compared to a newbie who doesn’t.

Create an Autoresponder Series

Since you already know what your subscribers want and since you already have an incentive to draw them in the next line of action is to create an autoresponder sequence that is designed to give them value and make you money.

Your autoresponder sequence should focus on giving value first before any promotions. This means you should ensure your first few messages give people enough free information to justify them spending money with you. First, this helps you gain the trust of your subscribers and also makes it clear that you’re not just there to take their money but to offer them genuine value.

You should also make sure you don’t spoil your list with freebies because doing that will only attract freebie seekers towards you but you should be sending them promotions every once in while to prepare them to spend with you.

Create a Landing Page

Now you have your whole email list building system set up, which includes knowing your market, creating the right lead magnet and setting up an autoresponder series. The next question is, how do you get subscribers to your email list? Should you just set up opt in forms on your blog sidebar and expect subscribers to come? This is where having a landing page comes in.

Even though there is nothing bad about having a subscription form on your blog, having a landing page increases the chances of people subscribing to your email list because there will be less distractions thus making it easier for people to take action.

You also need to know that not all landing pages are equal so you should focus on making your landing page outstanding by hiring a professional designer to help you design it or by using good theme frameworks such as the Premise Framework by Copyblogger or the OptimizePress Framework (I use both and they’re awesome!).

Once you’re ready to set up your landing page you should ensure your landing page has the following qualities

  • A great headline that tells your readers why they should subscribe
  • Great bullet points that lists the benefits of subscribing to your newsletter
  • A solid and clearly defined lead magnet to attract subscribers (in a place where visitors can see it clearly)
  • Clear call to actions

Those are just a few things quality landing pages should have. If you’re interested in learning more about building great landing pages you can read the landing page tutorials on Copyblogger.

Market Your Landing Page

This is where the main action comes in. You can have a great understanding of your market, the right lead magnet and the best autoresponder sequence to establish a bond with your subscribers and make you money at the same time but you won’t get any results until you understand how to market your landing page.

There are several ways to market your landing page but I’ll be listing two of my best methods below.

Guest Blogging: Guest blogging is my #1 method for generating traffic and building my email list because it works. I get hundreds of email subscribers from every single guest post that goes live on a big blog and I have gotten as much as 400 subscribers from one guest post. All you need to do is look for the top blogs in your niche, write the best guest posts you can, send it to them and include a link to your squeeze page in your author bio with a clear call to action. This alone will result in hundreds of subscribers for you thereby adding more money to your pocket.

Article Marketing: Another great and effective technique for generating traffic to your squeeze page is article marketing. This doesn’t bring instant results like guest blogging, but if properly done, will be worth it on the long run. All you need to do is look for the 5 best article directories online write great and well optimized articles for them with a link back to your squeeze page. With time these articles will begin to rank and you will also be raking in traffic to your landing page thus leading to more subscribers.

A System?

Building a successful email list that makes you money is all about creating a system that bring results. The above are practical tips to help you start making money online from having a solid email list.

Is Your Blog iPhone Ready?

Posted: 28 Jun 2011 07:29 AM PDT

I am quite stubborn when it comes to adopting new trends, and one I didn’t pay too much attention to initially was mobile surfing. Over time I started to notice that more and more people were using mobile devices to browse the web, making it an aspect most web publishers should consider.

Daily Blog Tips already has a free iPhone app (search for the name on iTunes or on the App Store and you’ll find it), but I am always looking for new ways to make my content available on other platforms. If you are the same you should check an article from Next iPhone News on this topic.

blog-iphone-ready

It basically lists 5 ways to make your blog available on the iPhone. As you might expect it includes a WordPress plugin to create an mobile version of your website, free services to make apps for your blog and so on. One tips surprised me, though. Did you know that you can create an icon for your blog that will be used whenever iPhone and iPod Touch users bookmark it or create a link on their homescreen? It’s much like a favicon, but instead of being used on your visitor browser it will be used on his iPhone. Pretty cool huh?

Anyway you can check the full article here: 5 Ways To Make Your Blog Available on the iPhone.

The Most Overrated Piece of Blogging Advice I’ve Ever Heard - DailyBlogTips

The Most Overrated Piece of Blogging Advice I’ve Ever Heard

Posted: 26 Jun 2011 10:33 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Ali Luke. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

"Blog every day."

That's what I was told, when I started out three years. It's probably what you've heard too.

And now, I think it's massively overrated advice.

Why?

#1: You're Wasting Your Time

When you start out as a blogger, you have very little traffic. Virtually no-one is reading your posts.

Of course, you need to get some content in place before you start promoting your blog – but this really isn't a case of "build it and they will come". Your blog is all but invisible. Instead of pouring hours into writing daily posts, write two posts a week and spend the rest of your time promoting them.

Do It:

For every hour you spend writing for your blog, spend an hour on promoting your work (e.g. guest posting, commenting, interacting in forums, using Twitter and Facebook).

#2: Your Posts Are Poor Quality

Some bloggers can turn out a great, content-rich post every day.

Most can't.

If you find yourself writing something – anything – just so that you can hit "publish" before midnight, then you're doing it wrong. Why would anyone want to read a post that you threw together just to meet your own arbitrary targets?

Do It:

Spend longer on each post – and look out for common blogging mistakes. Draft your post, then wait until the next day to edit it: your subconscious mind will keep working on it in the meantime.

#3: Readers Don't Necessarily Like It

Have you ever unsubscribed from a blog because it posted too much?

I have. In fact, I'm much more likely to unsubscribe because a blogger posts too often than because they post too infrequently. I've stayed subscribed to Skelliewag because Skellie's posts are so insightful – even though she often goes months without posting.

Daily posts could be overwhelming your readers – especially if you're trying to write in-depth posts that deliver huge value.

Do It:

Ask your readers – do they read every post? Would they prefer fewer posts?

#4: You'll Burn Yourself Out

You probably have a day job, or a family, or school work … maybe all three! If you're trying to maintain a daily blogging routine, you may well find that you last for a month or two before simply giving up.

It takes time (often years) for a blog to gain traction, and you want a posting rhythm that will work month after month.

Do It:

If you're starting to feel burnt out and jaded, then take a break. Tell your readers that your blog is on hiatus for two weeks – and give them some links to old posts so that they've got something to read in the meantime.

Now, you can probably name plenty of very successful blogs that post daily, or even more frequently than that. (Daily Blog Tips might come to mind … ;-) ) So why's it working for them?

Well, daily posting can be a perfectly good strategy – if you have the right sort of blog.

When Daily Posting Does Work

Successful blogs with 5-7 posts a week typically have one or more of the following:

#1: Guest Posters

Although Daniel does most of the writing here on Daily Blog Tips, you'll also notice frequent guest posters (like me!) popping up. The same goes for almost every big blog with daily (or more) posts.

ProBlogger typically posts twice daily now, but more and more of those posts are coming from guests. Copyblogger has a new post every weekday – but they not only have guest posters, they also have several staff members (Brian, Sonia and Robert).

(Of course, taking guest posts can actually end up costing you more time because of the admin and editing involved: I recommend reading Managing Guest Post Submissions Efficiently so you can keep things simple and streamlined.)

#2: News-style Content

Big tech-related blogs have to keep their finger on the pulse – which means that they need to have at least one post per day. Often, though, news posts are short and succinct: they're not evergreen content that's intended to stay relevant for months or years.

#3: Short, Focused Posts

It's easier to keep up a daily posting rhythm if your readers are used to short posts that deal with a single topic or idea. Think of Seth Godin, for instance. Bite-sized chunks of information can be popular … if you have the knack of being concise and avoiding waffle in your writing.

#4: Blogging for SEO Purposes Only

If your blog's main purpose is to get traffic (perhaps so readers will click on ads, or so you can promote your product) then daily posting could be a good strategy. You might simply be trying to build up a lot of content on your site – and you don't care if you lose readers' attention.

So … should you be posting daily? Unless you've got a team of guest-posters, or a real need to stay up-to-the-minute, or an audience that demands short, snappy content … then I'd say no.

I've seen so many bloggers end up disillusioned and burnt out because they followed the advice to post daily, and it got them absolutely nowhere.

For most bloggers, one to three posts per week works well. Even one post every other week can be enough to keep up the momentum for you and for your readers.

I'm sure this is a topic that'll stir up some strong opinions … and I'd love to hear your point of view in the comments! Have you tried daily posting? Did it work for you – or did it lead to burn out?

The Joe Girard Method: What the World’s Greatest Salesman Can Teach You about Sales and Marketing - DailyBlogTips

The Joe Girard Method: What the World’s Greatest Salesman Can Teach You about Sales and Marketing

Posted: 24 Jun 2011 07:56 AM PDT

This is a guest post by Aman Basanti. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

Joe Girard is a car salesman. But he is not your average car salesman, he is the world’s best. It is not a self-professed title either, it has been awarded to him by the Guinness Book of Records, who have recognised Girard for his amazing record of 13,001 cars sold in just 12 years.

Not that Girard needs a formal certificate to prove his salesmanship. Anyone who has ever met him can tell you that Girard’s a cut above the rest. When he pays his bill at a restaurant, for example, he attaches his business card to the bill (along with a healthy tip) and tells the waiter to call him when he needs a new car.

And that is Girard holding back.

Often he does not even need to meet someone to give them his business card. Like the time Girard went to a football game and took with him a bunch of cards. When someone scored a touchdown, Girard surprised the crowd around him with a confetti shower of his business cards by throwing them into the air.

Beyond Girard’s Eccentric Techniques

Yet you would be mistaken if you thought the secret to his success was using bizarre and socially risky marketing techniques like his football game shenanigans. Sure they have worked wonders for Girard but that is only because at the heart of these strange and colourful tactics is a principle that is neither strange nor colourful. In fact it is so banal and commonsensical that it is frequently overlooked and ignored, often to the detriment of otherwise smart and talented salespeople, bloggers and marketers.

How Girard First Learnt of the Secret

Girard was 12 when he first learnt of the principle. He was working as a newspaper delivery boy for a local paper. One day the paper announced a contest to see who could solicit the most number of new readers. The prize was a brand new bicycle. For a 12 year old boy from a poor family, a new bike was the stuff of dreams.

Girard jumped at the opportunity and started spending all his spare time pounding the pavement and prospecting for leads. The competition was stiff. There were many talented newsboys competing for the bike. In the end, however, Girard won.

As he stood there with the new bike in hand looking out at the other newsboys, Girard realised something that stayed with him for all his selling career – any one of the other newsboys could have matched his salesmanship and won the competition. Yet they did not. Why? Because they did not want the bike bad enough.

And that is the great secret of the greatest salesman in the world – you can gain an instant advantage over your competitors if you just work a little harder than everyone else.

Why This Matters to Your Blogging and Marketing Efforts

This is an important point because as salespeople, marketers, bloggers and businesspeople we are obsessed with working smarter. We are constantly bombarded with products and advice by gurus who tell us to work smarter. Yet what separates the winners from the losers is not always knowledge and being smart but the effort of putting that knowledge into practice.

So while it is important to find ways to work smarter, it is also important to remember the importance of working harder.

How hard?

For Girard it meant handing out a whopping 16,000 business cards a month. Compare that to your average car salesperson who hands out a measly 500 cards a year and you quickly realise that it is not his strange and quirky tactics but his strong work ethic that is largely responsible for his stunning success.

Take a lesson out of Girard’s book and start working harder. Write more articles. Submit more guest posts. Read more books. Test your ads more thoroughly. The list is endless and there is no lack of things you can do to become more successful.

If there is a lack, it is a lack of will to go out and do it.

Poll: What Browser Are You Using These Days?

Posted: 23 Jun 2011 05:42 AM PDT

I used to be a die hard Firefox fan. Just check the “Software” category on this blog. You’ll see dozens of posts about Firefox, related news and favorite extensions. Then one day Google announced it was going to launch a browser….

As you probably know that browser is called Google Chrome. When it came out I decided to give it a try, just to know what was going on. I had no plans at all to switch, as I was very happy with Firefox.

At first I liked it a bit, but it didn’t have all my extensions, my bookmarks, and things were a bit different, so I kept using Firefox.

Somehow once in a while I would open Chrome and browse a bit with it, and over time I started to notice how faster it was compared to Firefox.

Long story short within a couple of weeks I had ditched Firefox completely in favor of Chrome, and these days it’s just a pain to use Firefox because it’s much, much slower in my opinion. Curiously I haven’t added any extensions to Chrome at all, and I am doing just fine in that regard.

I haven’t tried Firefox 5, and while I still think it’s a solid browser, I think I’ll be sticking to Chrome now.

But I figured maybe not everyone feels like this. Hence the poll. Share with us your favorite browser, and drop a comment if you want to elaborate your thoughts.
