The Steven Spielberg Method: How to Write More Blog Posts In Less Time - DailyBlogTips

The Steven Spielberg Method: How to Write More Blog Posts In Less Time - DailyBlogTips

The Steven Spielberg Method: How to Write More Blog Posts In Less Time

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 10:23 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Aman Basanti. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

In a recent interview, Steven Spielberg, the famous Hollywood film director of hit films, Jaws, E.T. and The Color Purple, admitted to a strange habit. He said he liked to seek out distractions while working on a film.

"I’m more lucid about my own work if I have got something to distract me" said Spielberg of his peculiar practice. "I can be making a movie and then I can go off that movie for a half an hour while they are lighting the set and I can be looking at the script and making changes with the writer on my next movie."

To most people Spielberg's appetite for distractions is a little puzzling. To them it sounds counter intuitive at best and downright destructive at worst. After all, why would somebody purposely seek out interruptions while working on a project?

Spielberg's Subjectivity Problem
The answer comes down to what Spielberg calls the subjectivity problem. When you are working on a piece – be it an article, a music track or a film scene – you get too involved and lost in your work. You lose perspective of how a first time viewer would see the work. In Spielberg's words, you lose your objectivity, which he defines as "losing sight of what you are doing and not being able to see it from the 15th row back, where the audience lives."

The only remedy for this problem is time away from the work at hand. You have to take a step back from that piece in order to gain a fresh perspective. But spending time away from work is counterproductive as it wastes time. It slows down the rate at which you can create content.

This is where the Spielberg method comes into play. Rather than working on one project at a time, he works on multiple projects. That way the time away from one film is time spent on another. That is, the down time of one project becomes the up time of another project – allowing Spielberg to complete more projects in less time without sacrificing quality.

How to Turn Downtime into Work time
If you want to write more quality blog posts in less time, then consider the Spielberg method. Rather than working on one post and seeing it through till the end, work on multiple posts at a time.

When you start feeling stale and lost in one, switch to the next and work on that. Similarly, when you have run out of ideas or lost your train of thought on the second post, jump to the next one or go back to your first post and continue working.

Like Spielberg, you too will find that you return to your blog posts with greater clarity and direction than when you left them.

Google’s Page Speed Service Wanna Make The Web Faster

Posted: 28 Jul 2011 09:04 AM PDT

How would you like to have Google grab all your site files, host them on a Google server, optimize the loading time with several tweaks, and then allow your visitors to visit your site directly on Google’s servers all around the world?

I sure wouldn’t mind (except maybe for the aspect of losing control).

The good news is that soon this will be possible, as Google just announced a new service called Page Speed Service. According to the announcement post:

Page Speed Service is an online service that automatically speeds up loading of your web pages. To use the service, you need to sign up and point your site's DNS entry to Google. Page Speed Service fetches content from your servers, rewrites your pages by applying web performance best practices, and serves them to end users via Google’s servers across the globe. Your users will continue to access your site just as they did before, only with faster load times. Now you don't have to worry about concatenating CSS, compressing images, caching, gzipping resources or other web performance best practices.

google-page-speed-service

The service is being offered to some beta testers right now, and soon it will be available for all web publishers. Right now what you can do is to run a simulation here to see how much your website would gain from Google’s service. In my case it wasn’t a huge boost. The “Page Load Time”, which is the main metric, improved by 19%.

If you like the results and to become a beta tester, though, you can apply using a link on the official announcement post (I linked to it above).

The One HUGE Ebook Mistake That Kills Your Sales (Before You’ve Even Written a Word) - DailyBlogTips

The One HUGE Ebook Mistake That Kills Your Sales (Before You’ve Even Written a Word)

Posted: 27 Jul 2011 01:48 PM PDT

Have you got a killer ebook idea?

Maybe you want to write the definitive guide to your field. Maybe you've got a huge amount of expertise and you can't wait to set it down in words. Maybe you just know you've come up with a killer money-making idea.

STOP.

You might be able to make a catastrophic mistake.

How do I know? Because I've done it too.

A couple of my ebooks have been complete flops. They were well-written (at least, I like to think so), but they simply didn't sell. Why? Because I made a stupid mistake.

I assumed that what I wanted to write was the same as what my audience wanted to read.

HUGE mistake.

I spent weeks slogging away at ebooks that no-one cared about. My failed ebooks were too general. They tried to be the ebooks that everyone needed … and they ended up being the ebooks that no-one wanted.

But, thankfully, I wised up. I started listening.

And the rest of my ebooks – the ones that my audience actually wanted – have done just fine. (You can take a peek at them at Bloggers-Guides.com, if you want.)

So here's how you can avoid making my stupid mistake – and how, instead, you can create ebooks that your audience just can't resist.

You Have to Find Out What They Want

You can't afford to make assumptions.

Do you know what your audience want – or are you just guessing?

Have you convinced yourself that your really cool ebook idea is going to work, just because you want to write it?

I'm afraid that's not good enough.

I don't want to sound unkind here. I'm absolutely in favor of writing for the sheer joy and pleasure of writing. But I'd guess that you've got some different motivations for writing your ebook – like bringing in traffic, or making money.

And so I need to be honest: you've got to find out what your readers really want.

It's not hard to do that. It doesn't take long. And it can save you months of wasted time.

#1: Look at Your Comments and Emails

One great place to start is with your blog's comments, and any emails that you've received from readers.

What posts met with a great response? What did readers thank you for?

What are readers asking for? What do they want to learn?

If you've got any particularly responsive readers – people who comment again and again – then send those people an email. Ask them to expand on one or two of their comments: find out what exactly they want help with.

#2: Ask Around on Social Networks

Even if tumbleweed is rolling through your blog's comments, you've probably got some people who'll respond on Facebook and Twitter. Put out some questions, like:

What's your biggest struggle with …

What do you find hardest about …

How could I help you with …

#3: Read Other Blogs in Your Niche

Look for blogs that have similar topics to you, but larger audiences.

What do they regularly post about? Which posts seem to get a strong reaction? What are people asking in the comments?

You can do the same with forums, though try to make sure that the audience is at a similar level of expertise and engagement to your own. If all your blog's readers are expert musicians, an ebook on "How to play Chopsticks on the piano" probably won't go down too well.

#4: Run a Survey of Your Audience

This is the big one – something that I highly recommend, even if you only have a small audience.

Create a survey. Ask them exactly what they want from you – and make sure you give them plenty of chances to tell you.

You might want to ask about:

  • Several possible topics for your ebook. If you're writing about personal finance, for instance, your options could be getting out of debt, saving for retirement, starting a side business, investing, and living more frugally.
  • The expertise of the respondent. Do they consider themselves a beginner or an expert in this field – or somewhere in between?
  • How much they'd be willing to pay for your ebook. Make sure you include a "nothing" or "I wouldn't pay for it" option.
  • Any bonuses that they'd like you to include. Some authors package audio, video or worksheet files with their ebooks, to make them even more valuable for the reader.

It's a good idea to use multiple-choice because that makes your survey quick and easy to fill in. But whenever you ask a question:

Add in options that you think might not be popular – because you'll be surprised!
For every multiple-choice question, give readers the chance to write in their own answer.

I use SurveyMonkey to run my surveys – the basic level is free, and it's an easy way to collate and analyse results.

One more thing: don't kid yourself that this post doesn't apply to you. Because that's exactly how I felt … and that's how I ended up making stupid, costly mistakes.

Best of luck with your ebook – I hope to see it flying off the virtual shelves very soon!

6 Reasons Blogging is a Good First Business

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 10:55 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Jacqueline Boss. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

The dream of becoming self-employed is the fuel that takes so many bloggers from the first few months of scraping for followers to the successful later years of making a comfortable income. But what is it about blogging in particular that makes it such a great option for first-time entrepreneurs?

1. There is a wealth of information about blogging

What entrepreneurs of big businesses do is search for an unfulfilled need in the market, and fill it, often with a fancy new product. This is a great money making strategy, but an extremely risky one because there is so little data for them to base their businesses on. Even if they are entering a market that is saturated with competition, it is unlikely that their competitors will want to share any insider information. And market research is expensive and time consuming.

Not so with blogging. You can find free, online, step-by step guides for almost any blog-related topic under the sun, from SEO and drawing traffic to which WordPress plugin to use to run contests and how to leverage your blog to get free products and services. Blogs are in the business of giving away free information. Unlike Coca-Cola which feverishly guards its secret formula, bloggers happily give theirs away for free.

The rest of this article can be found here.

Global Success Club Review - DailyBlogTips

Global Success Club Review - DailyBlogTips

Global Success Club Review

Posted: 26 Jul 2011 07:38 AM PDT

I haven’t spent money on Internet marketing ebooks or membership sites for a long time (if I remember well the last one was Aaron Wall’s SEO Book!), but this month I forked out $97 to get access to a site. I am also planning to renew my subscription, so I figured some of our readers could be interested as well. But here’s is the whole story.

A couple of weeks ago a person approached me via email asking what advertising options I had available on my site. I told him I work mostly with banners, but that I was sold out at the time. Nevertheless I asked what product or service he wanted to advertise, so that I could see if it was a good fit. He replied saying it was a membership site called Global Success Club, and he sent me a guest account so that I could check it out.

I had seen that name around (even on some high profile sites like John Chow and Shoemoney), so I decided to check it out.

What I Didn’t Like

At first I wasn’t impressed at all.

The sales page looked like all those “get rich quick” and “work from home” products you have out there. On top of that there was a lot of hype in the sales copy. Things like “Make Six Figures In The Next 90 Days!” and “Absolutely Guaranteed!”. This is a big turn off for anyone who has been online for more than six months…

I had a free guest account, though, so I decided to login to the members area to understand what was going on inside. Here’s the screenshot of the Dashboard:

global success club review

As you can see the first menu item is called “Business Center”. Inside it you’ll basically find material to become an affiliate of the program, so that you can refer others and earn a commission by doing it. That is pretty much how the “money marking” part of the program works.

I am not a fan of such programs, but there was one thing useful there if you are just getting started with Internet marketing. It’s called “90 Days to $100k Per Year Program”. It’s a step-by-step program, where every day you’ll have a set of actions and tasks to perform.

I checked the tasks for the first few days, and it seems that if you follow all the 90 days you’ll leave a good foundation for how to promote things online (they focus on promoting their own program, but you can use it for anything else you like). But then again, nothing revolutionary here, so if you have been working online for some time you won’t find this very useful.

What I Liked A Lot

So far nothing special, and if this was everything available for members I sure wouldn’t recommend it for anyone else, especially because it costs $97 per month. But then I went on to check the second menu item, called “Training Center”.

global-success-club

Inside it I found two pretty valuable sections. One is called “Business and Internet Marketing Center”, where you’ll find a bunch of Internet marketing videos (e.g., Email Marketing, Facebook Traffic, PPC Traffic), interviews with successful Internet marketers (e.g., Frank Kern, Chris Brogan, Eben Pagan, John Reese, Jeff Walker), and a couple of complete Internet marketing seminars, including one from Mike Filsaime that had a cost of $5000 when he run it a couple of years ago.

Things were getting better, and at this point I already thought the site was worth the $97 just for the training material you would get.

The second section inside the “Training Center” was called “Success Coaching”, and there you’ll find two complete programs with Tony Robbins (a very famous motivational speaker), and a section called “Top Speakers”, with seminars from a dozen more motivational and success speakers.

I went straight to the “Top Speakers” section, and I was blown away by the first video, from a guy called Les Brown. The video is about living your life fully and reaching your goals. While I was never a fan of “The Secret” type of stuff, this time around it made a lot of sense to me, and in fact I ended up watching the video twice. I liked it so much that I asked a manager of the site if I could give this video as a freebie to my readers, and he agreed. Here’s the link for you to watch it (no strings attached, not even an email address is required. Just click and watch).

After that I started watching the other videos inside that section. It became a habit to wake up and start watching one of them as I had breakfast. Then one day I was getting ready to start my morning ritual when my login didn’t work. My guest account had expired…

That’s when I went to the homepage again and I signed-up for a normal account. They offer a free trial for seven days, and after that you start paying $97 per month if you want to retain access to the site. My free trial expired and I paid the $97 gladly to keep watching the videos. I am halfway through them right now, so I think I’ll pay for another month.

What Else Is Included?

The other stuff included in the membership site I just glanced over. There’s a forum where members can ask questions, there are occasional contests with prizes for members who refer more people to the site, and there are some live webinars as well from what I understood. I was mainly interested in the training videos, though, so I didn’t pay much attention to those other sections.

Global Success Club: Worth it?

Here’s my take on the program: the hype they use to sell the program and the “money making” part didn’t impress me that much. As I said above it’s basically a referral program where you earn commissions by referring new members.

The videos inside the “Training Center”, however, make the site well worth the money in my opinion. I went to research online and I found another website offering those seminars and videos, and the cost was $97 per seminar. Inside Global Success Club you’ll get over 20 of them for the same price.

As I said there’s a 7-day trial for $1, so you can check it out and decide for yourself. Here’s the link to sign-up for the free trial.

If you have questions about the program let me know in a comment below and I’ll address them.

How to Be a More Productive Blogger - DailyBlogTips

How to Be a More Productive Blogger - DailyBlogTips

How to Be a More Productive Blogger

Posted: 24 Jul 2011 09:00 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Amey. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

At its core blogging is about sharing ideas and personal opinions. While bloggers may have ideas bouncing all over the place, a crucial choking point is trying to convey those ideas from our mind to paper.

Blogging typically requires generating loads of content, so if we can find a way to create that content at a more efficient pace it only makes our job that much easier.
Below are 5 action items we can follow to become more productive bloggers.

Create an idea list

Great ideas can spawn anytime, and we need to make sure we have a system to capture those eureka moments before they slip away. Whether you use a sophisticated application like Evernote or just pen and paper, come up with a set way to store blogging ideas and reference it when you are ready to create.

Focus on one article at a time

When it is time to actually write an article, focus on one at a time. While it may be tempting to flip back and forward as ideas pop into the head, it actually makes the final product take longer, while dropping the quality at the same time.

Outline your article

As useless as I thought creating outlines in English class were, I have never found them so important and useful as I do now.

Outlines allow us to visually see all pieces of an article and how we can best craft it together. In relation to blogging, an outline also makes it easier to see where we can link to other articles from our blog and insert any appropriate affiliate links.

Finally, an outline will let us know if the idea is actually meaty enough to be a full fledge article as sometimes the ideas in our head turn out not to be so grand or in-depth when we break it down onto paper.

Write all the way through the article before editing

When putting together an article you may be tempted to stop and go back earlier into the work to fix or add onto something, but that just ends of breaking the current concentration or flow of the article.

Write all the way through the article once, and then edit, remove, and add stuff as you see fit.

Create a checklist for post-article publication

Whether you submit your articles to social bookmarking sites, social networks, or email distribution lists, create a set checklist of tasks that should be done once an article is published.
Perhaps you could even pawn those tedious tasks out to somebody else, and by writing them out it makes it easier to share what needs to be done.

Wrapping it all together

Regardless of where we are trying to improve our productivity, creating a defined list of tasks or action items to follow is a great way to master that activity and achieve increased efficiency.

The less we make our brain focus on administrative tasks, the more free it is to be creative.

If you want to be a more productive blogger, stop thinking about quantity, focus on one article at a time, and rinse and repeat. Before you know it, you will be spitting out great content faster than ever before.

Not all Your Blog Posts Will go Viral - DailyBlogTips

Not all Your Blog Posts Will go Viral - DailyBlogTips

Not all Your Blog Posts Will go Viral

Posted: 22 Jul 2011 09:15 AM PDT

This is a guest post by Onibalusi Bamidele. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

I’ve been fighting a secret battle within me for sometimes now and I’m sure so many bloggers are doing the same. That battle is the battle of my next blog post going viral.

I used to be someone who writes what comes to my mind freely as a blog post, and in reality, some of those blog posts will go viral while others won’t go viral – but at the end, they are all impacting the lives of my readers, and that is all that matters.

Beware of the Crippling Effect

It is said that those who pursue money never find it: even though I don’t believe entirely in the saying I can see clearly there is some truth to it, and the same principle applies to every other facet of life. It also means those who pursue fame will hardly get it.

The question now is, why is this?

As bloggers, the key to our success lies in our creativity and this creativity is hampered when it isn’t our sole focus. When you’re obsessed only with writing viral blog posts as a blogger you will find it difficult to focus on what really matters, which is delivering value to your audience. One thing that makes things even worse is the fact that we bloggers believe in formulas, and the reality is that nothing in blogging is certain. If a particular formula works for you, or you’ve seen a particular formula work always for other bloggers and you decided to try it, without getting results you will start feeling differently about yourself and you will be confused about what to write next.

Do these instead…

Once you’ve realized that not all your blog posts will go viral, there are a few things you can do to ensure you always get the best from your blogging efforts, and below are 4 very important things to do.

Make Use of Ideas as they Come: One thing I have observed is that there is nothing we can’t learn from as a blogger, and that every single minute, every single day, there are always new ideas flowing into our heads. Instead of trying to wait until you get the idea for the next viral post, or instead of looking for a proven formula for writing viral posts start jotting down ideas as they come and start making the best use of them. Blogging can be compared to the movie industry. When a particular company manufactures a movie that isn’t a hit, they keep on manufacturing movies until one of those movies become a hit that will in turn cover the cost of the other failed productions.

Successful bloggers didn’t emerge successful overnight, so don’t expect the same. Instead do your best to ensure you’re able to deliver great, insightful and unique content to your readers on a regular basis. It might take a year, it might take two, it might even take more, but results will come – and when the results come other people will start envying you while thinking you’re an overnight success.

Focus on Writing Pillar Content: There are various kinds of content in blogging. One of the most common types of content you can write is what Daniel calls Killer Article. Killer articles, also called linkbaits or pillar articles, is an evergreen content that people keep reading and linking to for years to come. The reality is that your pillar content might not go viral when your first write it, in fact, it might not go viral the first month, but you will continue to see traffic trickling in to it for the rest of the year – the reason is because it is ever-green, it is time independent and people still find it valuable for their present situation.

A one-off viral blog post might only lead to a traffic spike that will end up dying in a few days or weeks time, but when you write pillar content you will end up enjoying the benefit of your labor for years to come.

Take Marketing Your Blog to a New Level: Another thing you have to realize is that marketing is the backbone of any successful blog so instead of trying to write the next best content why not focus on marketing your blog on a consistent basis till it becomes big itself? This way instead of trying to write the next link-bait your consistent marketing efforts will result in a slow, but steady, growth for your blog that will end up having an impact on every one of your blog posts in the near future.

Take Advantage of SEO for Your Blog Posts: I wrote a particular blog post over a year ago, when I was just starting my blog. At the time I wrote that blog post it hardly brought in 100 visitors in a particular month. That blog post is now the most popular blog post on my blog and it brings almost 2,000 visitors to my blog every month, mostly from the search engines. When you write a viral blog post it might get a boost from Stumbleupon which will die down with time, but when you focus on optimizing your blog post for the search engines it will keep on bringing you traffic for years to come even if you don’t lift a finger.

Instead of focusing on writing the next viral blog post, start focusing on optimizing your old and new posts for the search engines so that they can keep bringing you traffic for years to come.
