Money Comes From Traffic? Wrong! It Comes From Targeted Traffic!

Posted: 31 Oct 2011 04:14 AM PDT

This is a guest post by John Burnside. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

You may think that the equation for making money online is quite simple, the more people you have coming to your website the more money you are going to make but that isn't always the case. You have to consider into that equation that people don't only have to come to your site they also have to interact with it in the right way to give you the money. They have to click on your adverts, buy your products or act on your 'calls to action'. If they simply come to your site and the read your content and leave it's great but it isn't making you any money.

Real life example

One major example from my own experience is when I used stumbleupon advertising. I chose a couple of articles from my blog that I thought would be of interest to most people interested in making money online. I did indeed have a massive traffic spike and got well over 5 times my usual traffic but the bounce rate as well was 30% higher and I wasn't getting any more money than usual. This is because people on stumbleupon generally aren't that interested in the deeper content of a blog or the upsells but they want something which is initially visually appealing.

Type of traffic that you do want: Organic Traffic

I would argue that the best traffic that you want on a steady basis is google search engine traffic. People who come to your site for the first time through google have already done their own search and the search has come up with what they are looking for (hopefully your site). That is one advantage in your favour. The next advantage is that you have the chance to write a little snippet of information that shows up in the search and the title, this means that the searcher has already read this and decided that they want to see your site. Both of these factors create a level of trust with the searcher/reader that is totally unavailable through sites like stumble upon.

Once the readers have entered your site they are already comfortable with clicking through links to get to the information they want so there is less to stop them from clicking on your adverts, particularly adsense text ads because they come in a similar format to the search results.

Guest Post Traffic

People who come to your site through guest post links are usually there because they liked what you had to say on the guest site and they want to read more. Now this won't help you get more advert clicks really but it does give you another layer of credibility. The user has come from a well renowned site that they probably trust already and they have read a sample of your work and are looking to get into more of what you have to say. Because of these levels of trust that have been built up they will be more likely to listen to your product recommendations and pay attention to what you have to say.

What I am trying to say really is people will not spend money on your site if they don't have any reason to trust you or they don't have and reason to be on your site ready to spend money. You need to develop your relationship with your readers from the moment they see a link to your website all the way to where they take an action on your site. Pay attention to the user experience and it will pay off in the end.

How to Make Money from Google

Posted: 30 Oct 2011 05:10 PM PDT

Everyone’s dream job is to work for Google, right? Well, unless you are super highly educated, incredibly skilled, very lucky, and also know someone that can help you get hired there; it’s probably not going to happen. But there is a way to get paid by Google while working from home. It’s called Adsense. And yes you can earn money online with it — A lot actually!

Is this something you might be interested in learning more about? Let’s see… Have you recently asked yourself, “where can I find a job” or “what are some ways to make money” or “how do I start a home business” or any other question similar to those? If so, this information is for you!

What is Google Adsense?

It is a program that enables website owners to automatically serve text, image, video, and rich media ads on their sites. The ads are targeted based on the sites content so visitors are only seeing ads for things they might be interested in. Google uses its internet search technology to serve advertisements based on your websites content, the visitor’s geographical location, and some other factors. They generate revenue on a pay-per-click basis. Basically you get paid every time a visitor clicks on an advertisement displayed on your website.

Before you do anything, you need to get a Google Adsense account. It’s free and fairly easy to sign up so you shouldn’t have any problems with that. Then, you just need to put the code on your site. I won’t go into detail about how to do that because there are plenty of free plugins that will do it for you if you have a blog. If you don’t that’s fine, there’s tons of free information readily available all over the internet that will teach you how to add the code to your site.

How to make money with Adsense?

After you have an account and learned how to put the code on your site/blog, it’s time to actually start earning money online from this simple program. The only real way to do that is with content.

You need content and lots of it. But not just any content. It MUST be high quality and 100% original. Stealing other people’s content or using a bunch of spun crap will not get you anywhere. In fact, doing that will likely get you banned. On top of that the content needs to be focused around a niche market. You will need to do keyword research on a topic (niche) you are interested in and know a lot about, then build a blog around that topic.

Once you have done that it’s time to start writing. You need to write and write and write some more. Keep on writing new content every day for weeks, months, or even years. Publish every bit of knowledge you have about the subject and everything related to it. When you run out of things to say then start researching more related topics that you could write about. Just keep writing and publishing content.

For example, if you are a dog enthusiast and/or dog trainer, or know a lot about dogs in general, then you could start a blog about dogs. Teach people everything there is to know about every topic you can think of related to dogs. If you get to the point where you don’t know what else to say then do some research to find what sorts of questions people have about dogs, then write about that. If you don’t know that answer search until you find it and keep writing.

Try to become the world’s leading authority site on your niche if you possibly can. Even if you can’t just keep writing more high quality content until enough people take notice. Eventually you will build up a following. As your content builds up over time so will your rankings, traffic, subscribers, and so on. That will directly lead to more Adsense clicks and more money for you!

It will be slow going at first and you might feel like you are wasting your time getting nowhere. Trust me, just keep going. It’s not going to happen overnight but you are definitely getting somewhere with each article/post you write. If you do this correctly, there will come a time when your earnings start increasing every month and might even get to a point where you are making more money than anyone you know.

At this point you can drastically slow down on the writing. You might not even have to do anymore work at all. The passive residual income will be coming in daily with very little to no extra work on your part. And all that writing you did for so long without getting much in return will be more than worth it!

Also, be sure that you NEVER click on the Adsense ads on your own website! That means not even once, ever. And don’t tell any of your friends or family to click on your ads either. Don’t do anything to try and game their system. Doing so will get you banned in no time and they won’t let you back in. It’s not worth trying. You will lose a lot more money in the long run than you will make by using sneaky tactics to increase your income.

Once you have just about exhausted all the writing you can possibly do for one site in one niche, and built it up to hundreds (or thousands) of pages of original content, high rankings, tons of traffic, subscribers, great Adsense earnings, and everything else then you can do the same thing with another site. Just rinse and repeat the same thing you did with the first one. You can do it over and over again with many sites if you want.

And that, my friend, is how to make money from Google! Find a topic you know a lot about that other people also want to know more about, build a blog about it, and get to writing.

5 Sources of Inspiration for Your Business Blog - DailyBlogTips

5 Sources of Inspiration for Your Business Blog

Posted: 27 Oct 2011 09:27 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Nick Stamoulis. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

When it comes to content marketing, the number one problem most companies face is coming up with new topics. When you have to write 3-5 blog posts a week, plus articles and whitepapers, produce a video, write a company newsletter and so forth, it's easy to feel like you've run out of things to say in a short while. Don't be discouraged! Sometimes all you have to do is change the way you look and think about your industry and you'll discover a whole new bevy of blog topics just waiting to be written about!

Here are 5 places you can look for inspiration today:

1. Competitor's newsletters

You never want to copy the competition as that always leaves you two steps behind, but that doesn't mean you can't use the competition as a source of inspiration for your blog. Subscribe to their company newsletter and blog RSS feed and see what kind of topics they are focusing on. This is useful in two different ways. First, you'll be able to pull nuggets of information from their blog posts and take your own spin on it. Chances are, if the competition has done their research, the content they are writing is geared towards the same target audience as you. Secondly, it will also give you a good idea of what your competition isn't writing about. What niches do you see that you can dominate and claim as your own? What important information are they leaving out that your target audience is hungry for? By writing blog posts that fill in the gaps of the competition's content marketing, you are differentiating your brand and building authority.

2. Frontline employees

Who are the people in your company that deal with your customers every day? It's your sales clerks, people at the checkout counter, customer service department, field agents and so forth. These people interact with your customers on a daily basis; they probably understand the true needs and wants of your target audience better than a marketing report could ever explain. Ask them to keep their ear to the ground for blog topics. What kind of questions or complaints do they commonly hear? Every conversation they have with a current or potential customer can be focused down and turned into a blog post!

3. Website FAQ

If you're really struggling for blog topics, why not check out your own website FAQ? At some point you decided those topics were important enough to dedicate web real estate to them, so why not recycle your content and turn them into blog posts? Content marketing is only as hard as you make it, and there is no need to reinvent the wheel every time you're trying to come up with new blog post topics.

4. Webinar Q/A sessions

Webinars are a valuable tool for B2B companies trying to connect with potential customers. Why not get some value in return and use your webinar Q/A sessions to find blog topics? Every question asked is being posed by someone in your target audience (they already qualified themselves by signing up for your webinar). Chances are they are not the only members of your webinar audience or target market that have asked themselves that same question. Keep a notepad ready and jot down the questions as they come through, as well as a few notes about your answers. When you're done with the webinar it's easy to turn those notes into a few blog posts and schedule them out.

5. Blog comments section

Sometimes the comments section is more interesting than the blog post itself. Commenters can engage with each other in the comments section of your blog and the topic of conversation can spin off into a whole new direction. People will also ask questions in the comments, asking you to clarify one point or another. Some may even disagree with certain aspects of your blog post, or the entire post, and share their opinions in the comments. Comb through some of your well-loved blog posts and see what readers have to say!

Trivia: How reCAPTCHA Works - DailyBlogTips

Trivia: How reCAPTCHA Works - DailyBlogTips

Trivia: How reCAPTCHA Works

Posted: 26 Oct 2011 09:26 PM PDT

I’ll start with some basic facts which you may already know, but at the bottom of the article there’s a curious fact that you might have not heard before.

First things first, what is a CAPTCHA? It’s an acronum for “Completely Automated Public Turing test to tell Computers and Humans Apart.” Now in simple words: it’s basically a test used to make sure that whoever is performing an action is a human.

Why would you want to verify that? To avoid having bots or automated scripts doing things inside your website, application, and so on, which could lead to security problems as well as an overload of the system.

There are several ways to implement the test, but the most used one is presenting the user a sequence of letters or words and asking him to re-type and submit those letters. The image below illustrates how it works:

repatcha

The image below is the CAPTCHA test from a company called reCAPTCHA, which was originally a project at the Carnegie Mellon University and later got acquired by Google.

Now here comes the interesting trivia: on all reCAPTCHA forms (so those on all Google services) you actually just need to type the first word to pass the test and prove that you are human. The second word is one that Google’s computers could not identify on its book digitalization project, and by typing it you are helping Google to identify those words and complete their book scannings.

Neat huh?

It seems to be working as well, as every day over 200 million forms like the above one are displayed around the web.

Six Simple Steps to Writing Your Best Post Yet

Posted: 25 Oct 2011 09:18 PM PDT

This is a guest post by Ali Luke. If you want to guest post on this blog, check out the guidelines here.

How effective are your blog posts?

Maybe you're churning out regular posts, hoping to build your search engine rankings and engage your readers – but they don't seem to be having much effect.

You could spend months mastering SEO, tweaking your blog theme and building up your network on Twitter … but you could be wasting your time. Your blog won't succeed unless your posts are well-written.

Here's how to build a great post, in six steps:

Step #1: Know Your Purpose

Whenever you start a post, you need to know what you're aiming for. Are you writing a post that teaches the reader something new? Are you trying to be entertaining? Inspiring? Encouraging?

Having a clear purpose makes it much easier to write your post. Often, you'll have more than one aim in mind: you might be teaching your reader how to use WordPress, but you're also trying to build trust by demonstrating your own expertise.

Step #2: Create a Structure

To keep your reader engaged, your post needs a clear structure. Like any piece of writing, this means that it should have a beginning, middle and end. For a post, that looks like:

  1. The introduction – this should grab attention and set up the scope of the post
  2. The main part of the post – where you should deliver what you've promised (implicitly or explicitly) in the title and introduction
  3. The conclusion – this might be as short as a single sentence, but it's important to have something that rounds off the post

Without a clear structure, your post is likely to come across as abrupt or confusing.

Step #3: Write Directly to the Reader

As you write, focus on the reader. That means avoiding long paragraphs all about you – unless you're a very good writer and have a compelling story to tell, readers are likely to switch off.

Use "you" frequently, and write as though you're talking to just one reader (don't write "all of you reading this" – it's distancing). If you get stuck, imagine you're sending an email to a specific reader – you might even like to have a particular commenter in mind.

Forget what you were taught in school about writing essays: there are no prizes in blogging for big words. It's fine to use contractions like "I'll" for "I will" and "shouldn't" for "should not" – these help to make your writing sound casual and friendly.

Step #4: Add Subheadings and Formatting

A very short post might not need any subheadings – but once your post is more than 400 words or so, it's useful to break it up. Subheadings help your reader to map out your post, letting them instantly see where one topic ends and another begins.

It's important to use formatting to help with readability. That means:

  • Use bullet-pointed lists where appropriate, instead of having long, dense paragraphs
  • Add in bold text to pull out key sentences (maybe one or two per subsection)
Put quotes into "blockquote" formatting so that they stand out
  • Readers will be put off by long, grey blocks of text, so make sure your post is visually interesting.

Step #5: Edit Your Post

Unless you're a very confident writer, always allow time for editing your posts. This doesn't just mean looking for typos and grammatical mistakes – it means polishing up your writing until it's as good as possible.

When you edit, consider:

  • Are there any tangents in your post that should be removed? (Sometimes, these can be used for the basis of a new post.)
  • Have you used the same word or phrase too many times within a paragraph?
  • Do you have any long, complicated sentences that could be written more simply?
  • Can you cut out any redundant phrases? (Look out for things like "it is my opinion that…" or "most people will agree…")

Step #6: Include a Strong Call to Action

Add a strong call to action at the end of your post. A "call to action" is a request to your reader, asking them to do something specific. You'll want actions that help you in some way:

  • Getting more traffic to your post ("if you enjoyed this, please click the 'tweet' button to share it")
  • Selling your product or service ("click here to find out more about my latest ebook")
  • Engaging the reader with your blog ("leave a comment below to tell me what you think")
  • Helping the reader get good results ("take five minutes today to follow these simple action steps")

So – it's your turn! Are you following all the above steps when you write your posts? If not, which one could you focus on during the next week or two? Let us know in the comments…
